THIS PAST WINTER MY 49 8N WAS INVADED BY MICE. THEY PACKED THE MANIFOLD FULL OF FEED. I TRIED TO START IT FOR SOME TIME BEFORE I DISCOVERED IT.AFTER I REMOVED AND CLEANED THE MANIFOLD THE TRACTOR STARTED WITH A PULL START. IT WILL NOT RUN FOR MORE THAN 20 MINUTES. I PUT DOUBLE GASKETS ON THE MANIFOLD, I REPLACED ALL ELECTRONICS INCLUDING THE KEY SWITCH BUT IT STILL DIES AFTER 20 MINUTES.(EITHER WORKING OR IDLING) IT ACTS LIKE IT IS RUNNING OUT OF GAS. HELP !

Billie..... ....I'm having a hard time visualizing how mice can pack yer intake manifold, getting past the oilbath filter and carb valves.

On the otherend, I can visualize them lil'buggers stuffing yer exhaust pipe with pelletized feed, but the entire length?

Sounds like you ain't sufferin' from lack of fuel, yer sufferin' from LACK of AIR!!!

Check yer exhaust pipe for blockage. Gott some friends that play games by stuffin' exhaust pipes with potatoes?

Five years ago, founding N-Board member, John tOTG, reported a simular "run for short while" problem. Seems the exhaust manifold had burned a hole thru the wall into the the intake manifold. Exhaust gas would "recirculate" thru the intake and eventually "kill the engine". New manifold $50, cheap..... ....Dell

WELL THE NEW MANIFOLD IS ON AND NOW IT RUNS FOR THREE MINUTES !! THE EXHAUST IS CLEAR AND IT RUNS PERFECTLY UNTIL IT STOPS WITHOUT NOTICE. THE CARB HAS FUEL AND IF I RUN IT WITH THE AIR INTAKE TUBE OFF IT WILL PULL YOUR HAND RIGHT IN THE CARB. I'M LEANING MORE TOWARDS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. ANY IDEAS ?

DELL,
THEY ONLY CAME UP THE EXHAUST, BUT THE MANIFOLD AND VALVE SPRINGS WERE PACKED. I HAVE A NEW MANIFOLD TO PUT ON BUT I HAD CONVINCED MYSELF THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. I PUT DOUBLE GASKETS ON TO STOP ANY LEAKS BUT I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT INTERNAL DAMAGE IN THE MANIFOLD. WOULD THAT GET WORSE AS IT GETS HOT ? PULLING THE CHOKE WILL KEEP IT RUNNING A LITTLE LONGER.(VERY ROUGH THOUGH). I'VE HAD THE CARB APART THREE TIMES AND THAT SEEMS GOOD.I'LL TRY THE NEW MANIFOLD AND GET BACK TO YOU. THANKS

Sounds lie a good place to check.. that is.. when it dies.. pull the carb drain plug.. check for fuel.. also check spark first, to see if it died from a no spark condition.. like a switch going bad.. etc.

Oh yeah.. get a cat! I've had problem with mice too.. been using traps and those 'green' blocks out on my big tractor... messy buggers..
