I pulled the manifold off and it looked like water was in the front two valve openings/cylinders. When replacing head gasket I reamed out the bolt holes and puttied up the treads. I removed the front bolt again replaced it with new bolt with putty and tightened to 70ftlbs after warmup.
Cleaned everthing up, replaced the manifold etc. and it still is leaking, blows white smoke on startup.
Any additional suggestions will be appreciated..

Russ..... ..since yer so experienced (grin) in removing yer flathead. Taker off and have yer local machine shop "MAGNAFLUX" it. And also check for "warpness". Insist on the magnaflux, find one that can, $20 cheap. that is the ONLY-WAY you will convince yourself the head is good or bad. And I don't think its yer "block"..... ...respectfully, Dell

Ditto's to what Jim said, I was a mechanic/technician for 20 years and did quite a few engine jobs in my career. If you have coolant in the exhaust it can blow white smoke for quite some time. Get her running for a good while and see if the smoke starts to disapate. You should know in no more than a 1/2 hour. Good luck.

Russ,
If the muffler has gotten alot of coolant in it it will take awhile to burn it out. Run it good for a day, keeping an eye on the coolant level. If the block or head are not flat that could cause the gasket to leak.
