Well today I bought a used mower for my 2N. I was mowing with it for a few hours. Tractor seemed a little sluggish for this 5 foot finishing mower. Anyway I hit a steel cable once that stopped the mower dead. I got it freed up and mowed for another 5 mins. I had to stop to move some debris and when I walked back to the idling tractor I heard a wierd growling/marble noise coming from what seems to be under the shifter. Now when I engage the PTO or put it in gear and let the clutch out, nothing happens. No forward or reverse gears & no PTO at all.

Does this sound like a clutch problem or did I cook the trans?

I had the mower hooked directly up to the PTO shaft on the rear.

GOOD NEWS!!! in reply to Reid Graham, 10-19-2005 21:47:07
Thanks to all for the help! I got the tractor mobile once again. Like mentioned above, my sherman trans popped out of gear. I worked at the cable for some time, spraying it with penetrating fluid and managed to get it free and moving in and out again. Now I have a regular speed and a higher set of gears that I never had before. (I had never bothered to mess with the seized cable before)

The tractor is working awesome again.

Thanks again everyone! Without your help I would have ripped the tractor in half looking for something bigger.

The cable shifter on my 1950 8N is also frozen. When I had a similar (same?) problem, I learned of the Sherman on this forum. I grabbed the cable by hand near what would be a bell housing and forced it to shift back into gear. Did this with engine NOT running and tractor in neutral. Started up and drove away!

See "CLUTCH" postings for reference.

Good luck.

Gonzo.

Can you explain a bit further on how you did this? Did you try and push the cable into the housing, or did you pull it out?

I never really thought that could be the problem, but I sure hope so!

I wish I could give you a highly technical step by step explanation....

I grabbed the cable and pushed and pulled HARD with final being a hard pull. Started up and drove away!

If the cable is frozen into the sleeve, I figured I had to move the whole thing. Naturally, I will split and replace down the road, but I wanted to get the tractor moving....

I may cut the cable and sleeve and see if the frozen part can be eliminated (there is about two feet of the assembly hanging out from the transmission housing). This would allow me to control the Sherman until I replace the cable properly.

Have you tried the push-pull yet?

Gonzo

Check my GOOD NEWS! post. I did get the tractor mobile again. Like you mentioned, it was stuck in between gears. I managed to get the cable free, and can now shift into hi/low range.

Thanks for the help!

I forgot to mention that this tractor has the cable operated Sherman trans. The shifter cable is seized with it pushed in.

Reid..... ...sounds like yer cable operated Sherman shifter moved yer Sherman into "NEUTRAL". New Sherman cable shifters are available from RedRockMfg.com. Anything else is gonna mean splittin' yer tractor for access to yer Sherman tranny input shaft. And iff'n you do split yer tractor, replace the tranny input shaft seal. $3, cheap..... ....Dell

Dell, thanks for the reply.

I am hoping that this is the problem, I will try and pull on the cable tonight after work.

I would suppose that I have to split the tractor to replace this cable? Does anyone have a website with some ideas on how to support the front & rear of the tractor to do this?

Thanks!

Reid

Reid..... ...it should be intuitively obvious that the ONLY-WAY to gittchur hands on the OTHER-END of the shifter cable is by "splittin" the tractor at the clutch housing.

That said, there have been MANY postings about how-to split yer tractor, try searching the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board. Its NOT INSURMOUNTABLE exercise for the nuebie shadetree mechanic.

HOWSOMEVERS: recommend you consider the merits of having yer very own personal copy of the I&T FO-4 maintenance manual which will answer almost ALL yer questions about yer new-to-you tractor. Readily available from sponsors of this great N-Board; most agricultural emporiums. Amazon.com, BordersBooks, WalMart books; www.n-news.com also has great archive of 3-point implement manuals. Even yer local CHN Ford/New Holland dealer usually sells it, isn't that amazing? Even my local (byte my tongue) John Deere parts counter is selling it. $22 (cheap) gittcha one and readitt..... ...respectfully, Dell

Yep, I was raised on John Deere tractors. I learned to drive on a John Deere. All brands have their good and bad points, but I really enjoy the sound of a two cylinder John Deere. I have a late styled B that I use as well as the 8N. I am impressed with both of them.
