I know with an 8N it is a no-no to bush hog in 2nd gear, but what about finish mowing?I have a 5' Big Bee finishing mower that works great in 2nd but I don't wanna mess up the tranny. Also,I just bought the Big Bee,anyone have any experience with them?Good or bad? Thanks, Old8Ner

If the mower blade spindles are belt driven you can't harm the transmission by striking immovable objects. If it is a solid drive line don't use second gear.

To say it again, I have fixed about a hundred four speed Ford tractor transmissions and about 90 of them were broken because of bush hogging in second gear.

what about the 2nd gear on a 2N? is it as fragile as on the 8N tranny?

I broke a belt Saturday on my finish mower by hitting a rock. No damage to the tractor, just my pocketbook...$38 for a belt...ouch!

If you're not bogging the engine down, I wouldn't give too much thought about the tranny. There are wiser, more experienced members on this board who might hold a different opinion, but with a 5' mower and a healthy engine and governer and grass that is not too long or wet, I don't think you would be doing the tranny any harm. My 9N is slightly underpowered for my 6' finishing mower so I can only run it in 1st gear. I'm usually more worried about lugging the motor rather than hurting the tranny or clutch. The word "momentum" comes to mind. These N's are built pretty tough and unless you abuse them they will do the job. Besides, if you use 2nd gear, there will be that much less wear and tear on 1st gear.

My 2N has plenty of power for running my 6' finishing mower. Maybe you've got tougher grass than I do? Or maybe our tractors differ just enough to be noticable?

I agree about not worrying about the transmission -- seems to me the big worry when bush-hogging is the shock loads you get when you hit a clump of woody brush. I wouldn't expect this when finish mowing (don't send a finish mower to do a bush-hog's job).
