Hi Guys,
I just bought another 8n? I do not know alot about them, and need help identifying year/model.
This one may or may not be a mix of parts from
different years. It has a tag on dash above steering column that says Ford Motor co. #
8n174655. Very large wheel hubs. One crease in rear fenders, not two like my other one. High and low transmission 3 SPEED. Not 4. No proof meter. Hood has emblem below Ford emblem that says Ferguson system. No script on fenders. Hood
has alot of body putty, and cannot tell if it ever had Ford script. Starts and runs good.
No smoke, etc. But, the transmission has a whine
noise when moving. Usual for high, low trans???
ANY help with identifying year, model is appreciated. Can post pics if needed. Thanks, Rick

As Tim and Terry said, 3spd and no script is definitly 9N/2N. I just got a 2N with a completly different motor in it out of ??? Go to myoldfords.com and look for tractor identification. It has lots of pics to help narrow down the year.

P.S. Mine is front mount dist as well, careful washing out dust/dirt from rad fins when bushhoging. Dist will get water in it in 1 second!!!

Mike

Rick,
Sounds like either a 9N or 2N with a Sherman trans. 3 speed, single rib on fenders no ford script is def 9 or 2N. Pictures could help but serial number off of engine would be best. Alot of engine trading happened over the years so it could have different engine. Is it front or side mount distributor?

I found the number on the engine. It is 8N 174655. So, I assume this is an 8N engine in a 9N
tractor??? Should I be concerned about the whine
in the transmission? I plan to use the tractor to
brushog 12 acres, blade work, etc. Is it as good
as an 8N tractor?? Thanks, for ANY comments.

Sounds like a mix of parts, mostly 9/2N as all 2/9N's were 3 speeds check the lightly hand stamped serial number on left side of block just below head gasket on 1"x4" raised boss..that will tell ya what year engine you got.. should also be a date stamped on the bottom of the hydraulic pump under tranny..
HTH,
Tim
