Got a new axle and bearing and cup and installed them today also the new seal that goes in the tin cup as well as the new cork seals. Tightening the bearing as desribed in the I&T manual it is obvious I will be needing more shims I believe I have 4 in there now. Any advice on how many more I should get takeing into consinderation that the cup and cone are both brand new. The axle turns hard and the other hub is turning the same direction so it must be too tight. Richard

Richard..... ...yer doin' it right, that is why they have that "procedure" for shimming the rearaxle bearing clearances. Each and every bearing/cone will be slightly different and you CAN'T GUESS aheadda time how many you will need. And you changed yer bearing cup and cone.

Me? make a deal with yer local N-parts supplier, buy MORE $50c shimms than you think you will need and return those un-used shims. When I re-shimmed my 8N's rearaxle, I had 3-shims left-over. It wassn't worth my time to return $1.50 worth of shims. They're out in my 8N's excess parts box along with some other gaskets and seals. I suppose I could hang'em onnna barnwall nail along with my steering wheel with no grips..... ...Dell

Thanks Dell I tried to do it as the book states. I agree it is wise to keep any and all parts around as sooner or later you will be glad you have them around I am sort of a pack rat for stuff like that. Richard

Went back to the farm and now when I turn it the other side goes the opposite direction. Packed it with molly grease and coated the race as well and siliconed the shimes and and other mateing surfaces a lil. I will put the dad gum wheels back on tomorrow and torque it down... Last winter I had new rear rims and tires put on and they put the rims on the wheels backards so the wheels were set out alot but I am reversing them and it is back breaking.. Richard

Not in this case because the shims go between the retainer that holds the race and the cone. The more shims the more clearance between them. Richard
