I hope I'm not making a big mistake in the way I'm painting my tractor. This is my first and I really didn't want to spend a huge amount of money on painting....I am wire wheeling all of the tractor to get off as much rust and all as possible. Then I am spraying two coats of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rusty Metal primer on it. Then I'm following that up by brushing on two coats of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Sunrise Red paint. Then I'll be spraying it with a coat of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Sunrise Red so it won't look brushed and it'll have good even coverage. I hope this method will be good and will hold up well. Only time will tell I guess. It's not going to be show quality but I will be working the tractor lightly when I finish. What do ya'll think?

The only thing I would add is a coat of clear. I am also painting my tractor with rattle cans. I put on Rustoleum primer followed by 3 coats of paint followed by 2 coats of clear. Before the clear goes on the paint will be slightly tacky especially here in the Texas heat. After the clear coat it is no longer tacky and seems more resistant to scratches.

The only additional thing I would do is to wipe everything down before primer with prepsol to remove any trace of oil or grease.

I did almost the same thing and have been happy with the choice. The only thing I did differently was to wash any parts (after wire brushing) with a rust dissolver. I can"t remember the name of it right now, but NAPA Auto sell it. Anyway, this stuff "neutralizes" the rust, turning it into as hard black coating in the process. I"ve had absolutely no rust-through. One thing nice about using something like Rusto is that touch-ups are easy and cheap. Good luck.

Sounds good to me. If your paint job turns out too nice, you will not want to use the tractor and risk scratching it. (Ask me how I know this.:-)

Best regards,

Rick

Sounds pretty much like what I am planning to do but you might want to pressure washing it first to get off all the crud. I plan on using ZeroRust primer which sounds like good stuff and has a matching prep solution which can be used in a pressure washer. I've never had much luck with the Rusto paint primer and think there are better things available now.
The other thing I think I'll be doing differently is using brush-on paint on the castings, as has been suggested by others here and elsewhere many time, and just spraying the small parts that I take off, since brush paint is much cheaper and yields a much heavier hence more durable coat.

Herb, I sure hope the primer I chose works okay for me. I didn't choose it for any particular reason...I've never tried it before. I did brush paint on the castings....I primed the castings and then applied two coats of brushed on paint followed by one coat sprayed on. I agree 100%...I wanted the thick coating that only the brush can give. Good luck with your tractor.

I'm sure Rusto will be fine I just can't resist the urge to look for something different.

Brush followed by spray technique sounds interesting I've heard good results with it - give us some picts when its done!
