My 8N starts in about 2 turns. It just eats up the old style starter drive about every 4 months.

Richard..... ....I HATE it when people ask the "wrong or incomplete" question; I flunked mind-reading, just ask my ex-wife of 32 yrs.

You do realize that the current "old-style" starter bendix is NOT like the original OEM starter bendix and needs a "NEW" keeper-pin hole drilled about 1/2" closer to the armature plate, don't you. Iff'n you use the original "keeper-pin" hole, you will chew up yer replacement bendix engagement gear or not engage the starter gear.

Also consider yer flywheel starter ringgear may be chewed up and no-matter which starter drive you have it will chew them all up. New flywheel ringgear $20 (cheap) buttcha gottta split yer tractor to replace yer ringgear.

TIP: use yer finger tip to feel for sharp edges inside yer tranny starter hole. There should be NO SHARPIES ..... ...Dell

Dell, I am going split the tractor anyway to put a new clutch in and will install a ring gear when I do that. Where can I buy a clutch type starter drive you spoke of?
I have rebuilt this tractor engine six times in the last forty years, so I am pretty familiar with 8N,s.
If I had a nickel for every hour I have spent on this tractor, I would have enough money to farm another forty years.
The tractor has the original starter. So, if I buy an original starter drive from my Ford dealer, do I have to drill the new hole you speak of.
Thanks, Richard

Richard..... ....despite what the CNH Fort/New Holland dealer may tell you; the ORIGINAL 8N starter Bendix is NoLONGER Available, therefore you MUST re-hole yer bendix drive pin in starter shaft as described or read the bendix instruction toilet paper.

The NEW & IMPROVED "clutch" style bendix drive uses the "original" pin-hole ...but... you haffta ask the dealer parts specifically for the "clutch" style starter drive. They won't volunteer 'cuz they can't read.

You can buy the "clutch" style starter drive from many on-line sales including the sponsor of this great N-Board, Yesterdays Tractors. Just click up at the left-hand corner "market-place" of this page. Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

Richard..... ...the modern "clutch" style starter drive is supposted to be "better".

Don't for get, the reason for most 12v conversions, is because 12-volts really makes the 6-volt starter motor SPIN. And NO, the 10-15 seconds that it takes to start even the low compression N-Engine is NOT HARD on the 6-volt starter.

That said, you keep crankin' yer 6v starter motor with 12-volts for 2-3 minutes, yer gonnna melt yer starter motor gutts. Just like you would do with 6-volts. Understand?..... ....respectfully, Dell
