This is our first restored tractor. My father and I have been working on this since my brother hauled it out of an old farmer's machine shed last January. I paid $500 for the tractor initially and several times that in parts and several times that in our labor but I would not change anything for the experience.

My father and I have done most of the work but my two brothers have also contributed along the way. The brother that hauled the tractor home also assisted in re-assembly of the engine including putting the keepers in the valves, a job my hands are not well suited for. My other brother lives a 1,000 miles away but still helped out when he was home and spent several hours sanding sheet metal, another job I hate.

My father ended up making several parts in his shop that just were not readily available in addition to doing more than his share of the mechanical work as well as his duties as quality inspector for the job. Not bad for a man six months short of his 80th birthday.

For the eagle eyed amongst you, yes the color on the starter is not correct. The original starter was bad and I had a new one shipped to me so I could paint it during the week and have it ready when I went to my father's shop to put it on last weekend. That is when I found out that TISCO rattle can paint is NOT the correct color. I have several places I will have to touch up so I will repaint it when I do that.

There are a couple more pictures in Tractor Photos under 9N if you would like to see them.

I want to thank the members of this board for all the help I received during this process. We could not have done it without you.

Paul - that is a excellent job bringing old iron (and families) back! You deserve to sit back with a cold beverage of your choice and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

WOW, looks sweet. I won"t want to use it. At least not do any work with it. Did you keep track of the time and expense. Would be interesting. Craig

Paul & co..... ..congratts for the quality Daddy/family time. Looks good to ol'cuzzn weakeyes Dell.

Howsomever: only the sphincterally challenged CP (color police) would notice the color inconsistancy of your starter motor. More better you paint it semi-gloss BLACK (like rebuilders use) than to assume someone elses gray matches yer gray.

TIP: you can gitt yer own EMPTY 1/4 cup glass body spray painters and fill'em with what ever left-over graypaint you already have. Pre-Val is the trade name, I think. Ya just gotta ask for them at the paint/hardware store, about $10, (cheap)..... ....Dell, the 20/20 painter..... looks good at 20ft or 20mph

Great looking tractor guys! Can you read the serial# on it? Just wondering.

Sounds like you've done some other tractors?

Jeff

No serial number. Must have had a replacement engine put in sometime in the last 64 years. Wish it did. We were able to tell the year of the tractor based on several other things like the radius arms, dash configuration, ect.

I hear ya and know how you feel. Good job on the resto. I lost about $7000 in mine but it was worth every penny since it belonged to my granddad and just about everyone in my family has fond memories of that tractor. It feels especially good since your whole family helped out with the restoration. It now represents shared memories that can never be replaced. Hold onto that tractor.!

Man, that is sweet!! I just traded off my 1940 9N to a GOOD friend of mine for a bunch of labor but, sometimes I sure wish I hadn't done it. My first and toughest little tractor. Your Sherman won't get much use, eh? I have a set of headlights to match those holes if you want.
NICE job!!

Really nice job guys !!! I"m in the middle of my 8N overhaul and hope it turns out to be in the same league.

Hey, one question. Did you paint the rims before or after the new tires? I"m kinda torn. I"m gonna spring for new tires, so I"m gonna paint the inside of the rims before they go on. I"m just debating if I should paint the whole rim before mounting the new tires. I"m afraid of what the tire mounting will do to the paint job.

Thanks for the good words. It was fun.

On the rims we did one of each. We had to buy one new tire so I painted the rim before the tire was mounted and on the other side the tire was already on a hat rim so we painted it while the tire was on it. If it had been up to me I would have taken it to the farm tire shop and had the tire removed before painting the rim but the boss is a little on the tight side and he would not let me spend the $35 that it would have cost to do it. He must have spent two hours masking that tire off on both sides while I was doing other things. When he got done I spent a half hour with a couple of cans of Eastwood TankCote and painted it.

Either way works but I hate masking and it has to be done right to keep paint off the tire. The one that was mounted after the rim was painted was not scratched up at all when they mounted the tire.

Good luck.

Paul K.
