I never wanted to ask such a simple and stupid question but I don't know how much longer I can go on not knowing!

I keep viewing references to the ORC and how it was designed before bushhogs (rotary cutters) were invented. At my young and naive age, I simply don't know what farmers used to cut fields before that time. Any pics? When did the rotary cutters come along?

Thx for the education. Andy

They didn't have grass over there in Egypt, just sand, so they didn't have to worry about it. Besides, at the end of the day they were so tired from building those pyramids that they wouldn't have cut their grass anyway.

I guess the next thing was the scythe.

When I was a youngster, we used a 8N with an old pull behind sickle mower to cut our fields. This required two people to cut hay - one to drive the tractor and one to ride the mow. Us kids had to take turns on the mow. The pull behind had a gear box connected to one of the wheels. This would run the sickle while being pulled. I don't have a picture of one of these, but every now and then I'll see one out behind a barn. Our 8N ran a little rich and I remember having to breath the fumes riding on the mow. I'm sure others on here can remember these old mows.

We also pulled a horse drawn mower with the tractor. It didn't take a real wide swath and we had to watch our ground speed or the pitman would wear out real fast.

Drive through ahmish country in haying season and you will see lots of these mowers. Only they don't use 8Ns they use horse power.

As a child I grew up watching the farmer next door harvest hey using a Fergusson TO-20 with a three point hitch mounted sickle bar driven by the PTO. Talk about dangerous! If he would have fallen off of that tractor with the bar running, h wouldn't have had a chance! Everything from the flywheel to the blade was wide open and un-guarded.
