Anyone else use electronic shock collars on their dogs? If so, what brand? Plusses and minuses of that brand? I’ve been using Innotek for the last few years and am starting to think there must be something better out there. I have a 2 dog system, and last year one of the collars would not turn on. I contacted the manufacturer, and there is no repair service available for these; only replacement at a cost at more than half the price the entire system (2 collars, remote, carrying case, different length probes) cost me new. Now the other collar is getting stubborn about turning on. Just wondering if it’s time to bite the bullet and invest in an entirely new system from a different manufacturer. Or am I better off just to keep rebuying the same system?

I've used Invisible Fence ever since they first came out (15 years?). It worked great with my German Shorthaired Pointer, and that dog liked to run. After the pointer died we got an Anatolian Shepherd. At the same time we got the Anatolian we also moved to a new house. With the move and all I didn't get around to re-installing the fence. This dog also likes to run, and at 145 lbs he had no problem bringing down a deer. The fence is back up and we've had no more problems. Great dog, great fence, tasty deer.

I have a system (invisible fence I think) that has wire buried just below the surface and surrounds about 3 acres. If the dog gets within 5 feet (originally marked by white flags - now the dog knows where it is) he gets a correction tone - he keeps coming and he gets hit with the voltage. I invested a week in training the dog then turned the shock system on. I was supposed to shock the dog 1 time a day for a week. He took 1 hit - and will not go near - you can see him running full speed chasing a quail or a rabbit - gets the tone and slams on the brakes. Best money I ever invested - the dog is happy and gets to run free- but stays contained. I had doubts that it would work - so I bought a more expensive system that is garanteed - if the dog doesn't respond - you get your money back ! I get a new battery in the mail about 4 times a year - just change it out - haven't had a problem in 2 years (excepting my idiot brother in law cutting the wire with a dozer - just spliced it back together - you get an audio tone if the wire isd broken! Last year - for his birthday I went out and bought another 1000 ft of wire to expand his range - easy!

Carl,
Sounds like the dog is fine; only wanders where he's supposed to. What about the BIL (brother-in-law)? Who or what is keeping a rein on him? Can't have none of them wild bulldozer drivers running amok. 8 ^ )

Hey - now I get it! good one! The BIL as well as the FIL have become a problem. Ever since I started building my house they have come to look at me (the construction loan) as their personal money pot. Come up and do substandard work - usually I end up tearing down all the crap they do - or Ifind their mistakes as I get to later stages. Then they get my wife to write em a fat check for their "time". They also buy stuff on a credit card (materials for the house) then have me pay em for the stuff - course they never pay off the credit card - and 3 months later they come back and telll me I need to pay off the card for them.

Building the house has been a remarkable experience - except for dealing with those 2 incompetent crooks!

I have em minimized right now - drained the construction account so the wife can't write checks on it! Funny how they quite "helping" when they think the money is gone!

I'm not too crazy about them collars for dogs. (Reasons cited below.) But I strongly feel every irresponsible owner should be wearing one!

I admire you guys for trying to control you dogs. This shows that you care about your animals/pets.

I have had goats for the last 20+ years and during that time I have probably lost about 30 or 40 goats to domestic dog attacks.

Allowing your dogs to roam the neighborhood and get into all kinds of mischief and terrorize the neighbors is not my idea of caring for your pet.

A couple of years ago I spent several hundred dollars to install an electric fence around the perimeter of my pasture fence to try and keep loose animals from digging under my fence and killing my goats. So-far-so-good.

Rick

Rick, We , too, have had goats for over twenty years. Nubs and Togs, never had a problem with dogs but did have a coyote problem-- once!!
Electric fence (two strand) keeps the goats in and the predators out. Barry

Thanks everyone. Let me clarify that these units are for field use. And I've had them long enough that in the rare occasion they need their attention grabbed a simple tone does it without the stimulation. They actually enjoy getting their collars put on because they associate it with good things like a walk or a hunt. Agree 100% that something like this in the wrong hands can do more harm than good.

If you got the money Tri Tronics is the best available, you get what you pay for. I've used Innotek for a bunch of years also and had minimal problems. Try E-Bay as you can find a good deal if you are patient enough. Thge collars are not a miracle pil, and it has ruined way more dogs than it's "cured', be careful of when where and how you use it. Anyopne that 'borrows "mine must first feel the power on themselves before I let them take it. Get the multiple adjustment type for better sensitivity control.

Barry

BTW There is not a "weak sister" in these units , they WILL make your dogs eyes glow bright red and guaranteed to melt the wax in their ears when it comes to hearing you!!

Tri-Tronics classic 70 G-2 (two dog)is what your looking for. I belong to two bird dog clubs in San Antonio and we use them to de-snake or dogs in late summer. Pros and Conns, good training tool if you know what your doing and the flip side you can ruin a dog fast with one push of the botton. Get as must training as you can and be sure you know what you want the dog to do or not do before the button is pushed. Tri-Tronics is good quality and best bang for the buck.

I have just recently gone through the same thing. I had the system you get from TSC, I think it was Invisible fence. We have about 3 acres contained. About every 4-6 months the thing would quit. It would take the dog about 3 weeks to figure it out, I would buy a new transmitter, and we were back in business. I found out later, the system I had did not have a built in surge protector. We think lightning was zapping it. My wife called Contain-a-pet. Their system is garanteed as long as you own it. It has a built in surge protector. The man I bought it from said if it quits for any reason he'll bring me a new one. He also will mail me free batteries for the first year or two. I already had the wire down. I just purchased the transmitter and reciever (collar). Cost $600.00. Hopefully the last one I have to buy. Hope this helps. www.containapet.com

My stepfather used whatever 'cheapy' system kmart had.. sounds similar... 2 collars. etc. Had a training remote for 'bark abatement', as well as the wire transmitter for the 'invisible fence'. Worked great for as long as he had those two dogs.. ( couple years? ) Then whent he big dog died he simply went to an electric fence..
