My tractor had a number of areas with varying degrees of rust. I tried most off the shelf products. Navel Jelly and other similar products worked well but most required a lot of elbow grease to work the product in. I had the best luck with electrolysis. It completely removes all rust converts whats left to black oxide which will not rust any further and allows you to paint over it. Best of all it requires no effort to use.

I found this stuff on the bargin shelf at WalMart for like $2 or so. I needed something to unstick my rust frozen piston on my NAA Project Rustbucket - so I said what the heck and gave it a try, but I was very skeptical as I had never heard of the stuff (plus it was on the bargin shelf - so I figured it must not be all that great). To be quite honest, I don't know for sure if it was the Evaporust, or the Kroil penetrating oil - or both, but the piston came loose within hours. It dissolved the rust around the inside of the piston sleeve as well (I did do a little light sanding on this after pic - but the rust was pretty much gone by then). The hardest part was keeping the stuff on the sleeve walls, I had to keep brushing it on. Anyway, after my Rustbucket project was over - I poured the rest of the evaporust in a shallow bucket, and poured in all of the old rusted original bolts that still had good threads and was usable (I replaced most of my bolts with grade 8 hardware) and let it soak in the stuff overnight. If you have seen the "Before" pictures of Rustbucket - you get an idea of the condition of these bolts. In the morning I could not believe my eyes - almost all of the rust was gone, even on the severly rusted bolts that I pulled off the outside like the hydraulic lift cover bolts.

I will give my testimony - this stuff works!

Looks like the same thing as naval jelly (made by Duro and Permatex and others)...available at most hardware stores.

Has anyone tried the Rustoleum "Rust ReFormer"? I was thinking of using it on my fenders. It's apparently new and you just spray it right over the rust, but I don't know if it works well, or how paint adheres to it.

I haven't tried any of the products mentioned here but I have used a product called "Right Stuff". I picked it up at Advance Auto. You just spray it on, let it dry and then paint right over it. It really works.

I've used it and it turns the rust black. It leaves a great surface for paint and the paint I put on has lasted for 4 years going on 5 with no bleed thru.

rbell, From what I have see and heard the stuff works pretty well. It is best if you can let the part you want to clean sit in it. I have seen tools that have surface rust come out of the container looking brand new. I'm not sure how well it works if you have to brush it on something. HTH Terry NY
