I just purchased an 8n, 1948 model. The hood and side panels are rough, fenders are pretty good, and I think the front grill can be straightened out. This tractor has been converted to a 12 volts sytem. Brakes work very well and the 3 pt works. The steering is very loose, most of the play is in the gear box. How do you adjust or overhaul it? The tractor starts easy but does not accelerate very fast even with no load. How do I check or change the timing? The other problem is an oil leak on the front left hand side in the oil pan gasket (right under the fill spout).

SMA, where in Nebraska are you located. I'm outside Omaha.

There is not much adjustment to the steering. On either side you will see a ring with capscrews in it take the weight of the front of the tractor. remove one side and turn the ring. then do the other. Most likely it won't help much or at all as most have alreadt been done. Buy yourself an FO 4 manual and read up on rebuilding. Unfortunately the steering box is probably the single most expensive component on the machine.

Do you have any of the manuals for it yet? If so, which ones do you have?

I just got this tractor 2 days ago and have not purchased a manual yet, maybe in the next couple of days. What manuals are the best? I think TSC sell IT manuals.

I think some of the guys on the list have said there's a wide range of difference in various I&T manuals, depending on where you get them. You might be able to find that discussion if you do a search of the archives (under "manuals" probably, or maybe I&T or FO-4). I know you can order one from the YT website (here) bookstore that's a good one. That particular manual is invaluable. There are others listed on the YT bookstore that are good, too, especially the reprint of the original owner's manual. But that I&T FO-4 one is probably the most important.
