I"m at the point where I have to replace my 6V electrical sys. The generator died, again. Seems my re-build didn"t last very long...

I"m looking at the 12V conversion kits, but I don"t see a config that I"m looking to find.

Does anyone know of a kit that contains a 12 volt coil and a new ignition switch w/ an accesory post? I don"t want to rev the engine to high heaven to get the charge going.

I was hoping to cut a little time by getting the brackets and wiring harness already made.

thanks,

Russ

A quick follow-up...

I decided to take the generator and regulator in for one last check by someone better equipped than me... Turns out, the regulator was bad. I had tried to measure output of the genny alone, but I must have done something wrong. Came right up for the expert.

The shop happened to have a re-build 6V, pos grnd regulator on the shelf that he sold me for $10. He wouldn"t take any $$$ for his time with the test equipment.

So, I"m sticking with the 6V genny set-up and I HIGHLY recommend:

George"s Electrical Service
1336 Santa Ana
Sacramento

for anyone in the area. I know he does a lot of mail-order work for aviation mechanics, so he might do it for our old tractor stuff, too. You can call at 916-922-4277.

My shameless plug is now complete... As you can probably tell, I"m thrilled to spend $10 instead of a couple hundred!

Are you sure your 200$ genny is bad.. or could it be the 24-40$ regulator?

Sorry about the double post... I don"t know why that happened...

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Russ, Heres my thoughts on this..if your worried about revving it up,your obviously looking at the 1-wire alternator route, which is fine, but your N will run for many hours just off of the battery, surely at some point after it warms up,you will get the revs high enough to get that alternator charging,so theres really no need to rev up a cold engine to start the charging.. Also going with the cheaper 3 wire alternator and using the idiot light scheme works great and you don't have to worry about getting the rpms up,it starts charging as soon as ya start it..the wiring for this is very simple also..
HTH,
Tim

Hey Russ - Take a look down the page about 12 posts down. Ya got two answers to your question that maybe you overlooked. As far as a 12 volt coil and the ignition swithch you are looking for, you can find these at almost any auto pats store. I got mine at NAPA. Good luck with the conversion.
