I read several posts that mention a certain "N" as being "farmerized" It reminds me that a few years ago, there were several posts with a lighthearted list of the essential tools for the 'n' tool box. Could not find it in the archives. I think it is time that we visit and update that list again, if someone remembers what they were. I remember several: a rock, a piece of bailing wire, a piece of bailing twine, a piece of tin can (for setting points), a piece of 2X4 (for prying),WD40, duct tape, oily rag (to use to filter fluids and to wrap gas lines to stop leaks), friction tape, nail, copper penny, clothspin, tinfoil (for universal fuses). Any others?

Maybe it's just a West Virginia thing but Pap insisted on toting his .308 strapped to the hood ;-)

Ron, I wanted so much to post a picture of the contents of my tool box in the spring of 03,but I have looked thru hundreds of flicks and can't find it. I was going to add gas and start up my 51 8n and when I turned the knob, a small bird flew out from under the hood. After I calmed down I opened the hood and in the corner of the box was the most beautiful nest, with three wide open mouths peering out. I slowly closed the lid and went and got the camera. Took a picture and didn't go back for a couple weeks. By then nature had taken it's course. They had matured and left.

How about a 38 S&W for those instances when kicking the tires,"name callin", and "cussin" just don't work. Uh..don't tell "Old One Eye" that I was even thinking about this. She's kinda sensitive..grin

Golf Balls. I know this is wierd, but I find a lot of golf balls in my field, and rather than risk hitting them with the hog (FORE!), I pick them up and throw them in the box. Other than that, I have a 9/16-1/2' wrench, side cutters, and a big old hammer. I also have the aforementioned 30' of heavy duty chain wraped around the front bumper.

What?! Nobody has mentioned the absolute necessity of having 1" of assorted crud, nuts, bolts, a half of a battery terminal brush, old strips of wire, plow head bolts, and spark plugs for a different tractor in the bottom of the tool box? I mean, your tools have to have a cushion of something to rest on....Or maybe I was just spoiled with all sorts of goodies in my toolbox?

I can tell you what is in all 3 of my N tool boxes: A fuel guage stick, a stubby handle screw driver for setting points, an old spark plug to check for spark, a 7/16 box wrench to open the carb drain to check for fuel, 2 screwdivers, a crescent wrench, a pair of pliers and 3 or 4 link pins.

Since Hurricane Rita my most used tool is a 30' piece of chain used to pull downed trees and roofs and walls to get to other obstacles.

Some thirty year ago an oldtimer (god rest his soul), told me that all you needed to have was a "Barlow" pocket knife cause they never went dull even after using it as a screwdriver, a "Crescent" wrench cause it fit just about any bolt you had and could be used as a hammer, and some bailing wiring. I laughed at him because i thought he was just joshing me being that I was only about six years old. Well now after all these years I can honestly say that even though it was a bit of an exageration his words do ring true. Those three items have allowed me to get back into the house on many occasions to actually fix things the right way.

(for the woman tractorist) high-quality chocolate -- it serves the same purpose as the beer and the Red Star. :-)

A can of beer for that long walk home when it dies way out in the north 40ty. Of course that for when the thing just will not start back up because of dead battery, ran out of gas etc.

A pair of Crescent wrenches (usually a 12' and a 10") are the two main tools a farmer needs in any tractor tool box. As long as you have two of them you can just about take a tractor apart. Maybe toss in an extra 1/2" and 9/16" wrench for the little bolts.
