I want/need to change the transmission/hydraulic compromise fluid in my new to me 49 Ford 8N. A bit o’ winter maintenance. Thanks to this board and its archives I am now fully overwhelmed with details about viscosity and sulfur additive levels.

So without igniting further debate, I’m actually wondering what you can just go out and buy? The tractor, named Francine by the way, is in Western Washington, so I’m kind of limited to Napa, or Wal-Mart kind of stores.

I’m planning on doing oil, trans/hydraulic fluid and anti-freeze on 5 elderly toys this trip so need to be kind of efficient about obtaining supplies. Every one of them seems to want a different sauce!!!!

Thanks as always, reading this board is great fun.

I'm on the east side of the state where it gets cold. I've always used what Ford recommends, which is 90W. Costco has 5 gal buckets of 85-90W for about $25. My '50 8N has been on the farm since 1955 and never had a problem, winter or summer.

You could use NAPA's Universal Tractor Fluid #85-405 which is supposed to be the equivalent of the new Ford 134-D standard. As previously mentioned, it's lighter that the GL-1 mineral oil, which is what used to be standard. If you have low hydraulic pressure the GL-1 sometimes works better. On the other hand, if you live in a cold climate, the GL-1 gets very thick in cold weather and responds sluggishly.
So I guess I'd say since you're in Washington state and not Alabama, I'd go with the lighter stuff.
You'll hear lots of supporters of each kind here, so you can make up your own mind. I'm running the lighter stuff myself (my hydraulics are fine).

Oliver, if you are really a newbie, I just want to welcome you (although I know this isn't your first post). I'm a newbie myself. You've found a WONDERFUL place to learn things about your tractors. (Five!!!!! Wow! What kinds and years are they?)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the original spec'd GL-1 90 weight gear oil from NAPA. I personally love the stuff and it's what I use in my tractor. However, since you are so far north, I would probably go to the nearest ford tractor dealership or CNH dealer and get a 5-gal pail of the newer, thinner, MC134-D fluid. It is just as safe, but is a thinner version of the original which is good in cold temperatures. I'm afraid that if you use the "good ole stuff", it might be too slow in the wintertime.
