Well here goes....1947 8N....hydraulics.....the lift does not work at all. Here's what I've done thus far. I removed the bottom bolt from the right hand inspection plate and let the fluid drain until it no longer came out the bottom bolt. The fluid was very milky and thin....it was quite watered down. This tractor has sat outside someone's house for who knows how many years. I slid my hand down along the control rod into the oil and felt the end of the rod where it goes into the control valve pivot. The rod is connected and it is moving the control valve in and out as you move the lift control lever up and down. I started the tractor with the cover still removed, engaged the PTO and it was turning and looked for fluid spraying around. All was fine until I moved the lever to raise the lift....I didn't see anything spraying from the area of the oil tube. However, fluid did start spraying pretty high up out of the square part of the pump itself. That said, I cannot tell exactly where it is coming from to know what parts I need. If I drain enough fluid out to see it won't be spraying anymore....not sure where to go next with this...anyone have any advice? I'm thinking maybe relief valve but not sure. I know I need to change the fluid too, but I figured I would do that when I drain the old fluid to replace parts.

It does sound like pump problems.

Click on the link below and read how to pressure check the pump for a cracked housing etc.

If you're in a cold climate I'd guess that the water froze up and cracked something. Is it coming from a valve chamber on either side of the pump? You should see a bolt head on top of both chambers. Mine were cracked just like you describe. Might be lucky and just have a blown chamber gasket also. Hope this helps. Jeremy

It sure doesn't seem to be coming from the valve chamber on either side of the pump. It "appears" to be coming from down in between the valve chambers somewhere. There are two things that move back and forth down between the valve chambers...I don't know what they are but there's fluid all around them. When I try to raise the lift, fluid sprays up out of there between the valve chambers. I live in south Mississippi so not a real cold climate. I'm not saying it didn't freeze but I wouldn't think so.

The two parts that you see moving on the inside of the housing are the pistons for the pump. The PTO shaft goes through them and moves them back and forth in and out of the valve chambers to make pressure. I dropped my pump, put it on the bench, put the PTO shaft in and turned it slowly while looking for a leak. There should be enough oil left in the pump body to pump out if you go slow and watch carefully. Jeremy
