Can we have a specific area on this board that we host ALL of the more common - let's say TOP 10 or TOP 25 questions and their answers? I have seen "Won't Start" - "Bushhog gear" - "Distributor cap broken" - "What do I have?" - "What is a Sherman?" several, several times over the last few days.

There is a incredible wealth of information in the search engine results and in the archived section. However for ease of use, what do ya'll think about a easy to decipher FAQ section. I can and will gladly host it on a seperate server if Kim doesn't/can't alter the space/link for it here.

I am still learning alot and I have walked the route of those who have asked questions, but let us make the system better and see if anyone else agrees with having a complete TOP 10 - TOP20 list. I do not want to shun any newbies but I would like to cut down on the amount of repeat questions.

Andy

I think we as people like to have our questions answered as individuals, dialogue back and forth even on what may be a simple or commonly asked or even repeat questions is how relationships are built. I know after reading answers on this board for the past year I have a little insight to the various authors, this isn't just about old iron. For instance I know Claus will give a straight foward no nonsense textbook answer,Happy Motoring. Zane,Inventer and country tinkerer manages to share a little first hand expeirence with his replies, making them a little more personible, love the sawmill even though its not an N, please continue to share. And then there's Dell a little whimsical,I always read his answers, even the repeats. BG your mileage may vary. you dont find this stuff on a top ten list.
In a world where we are tired of being treated like a number this board does a great job of catering to us all as individuals.

It is nice to hear you are concerned. I have heard that there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers. With that said I love the comeratity of all here, from the cold one to you to the one what did i do now. I have only been a 8n owner for a short time and have been helped so much, some replies are short and sweet. Others can make you laugh because the answer is 2 down. I am a glass fabrication plant owner and if I can be of assistance for what I know just ask, this is what it is about. Answers from everyone with other backrounds so we all can understand. I have no understanding of electrical of my 8n and when it doesn't start, boy I'll need someone to tell me what to buy and what to uise to check it with. Ohm resistance, voltage drop, polarity, what the @@@@ is that. If you want annealled, heat treated, tempered, solar, low-e, bent, pattern glass, then e-mail me cause I have no forum. So if I can be so bold, please sit back and enjoy and have a beer to drown that bug up your @@@. Just kiiding, I love that saying. YOUR GLASSMAN< PAUL

Hi Andy: You've seen the other posts about FAQ pages, so I won't belabor that. The point I wanted to make however, was that new folks coming into this forum and asking the same ole question about ORC's, broken distributor caps, jumping 6v from a 12v battery, etc. gives us an opportunity to get to know that person. No one is forcing anyone to read or reply to any posts here, so you can surf on by if you see another "Broken distributor cap" post. However, if when you first came into this forum if you had gone to a FAQ page and found all your answers, we would not have gotten to know you, and you and I wouldn't have gotten to know each other offline and found out we're both computer geeks, etc. Heck, you might even get a job out of it down the road (LOL). I've been here a little over three years I think, and yeah I've seen lot's of dupe questions, but I've also made some good friends and learned a ton. To quote Zane: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

You speak such true words....such true words indeed - it is not about the initial question is it about the relationships that develop thereafter... how true.

Thanks for sharing, Ed.

Gentlemen,

What I'd like to see is indexing of the archives, or a better way of scanning them. If I use the keyword search and get 488 responses, I must open each one separately (from batches of 25) to see if it applies to my question.

Other than that I have no suggestions for fixing a board which isn't broken.

Nice discussion!

Paul

I think if you type in 8n won't start you'll see why there is so many repeated questions, some one looking for a archived answer with the exact same problem get's tiredof reading all the post's, I know I do at times.
As far as off topics go, it's a nice break and I think it say's alot when someone thinks enough of the people share a off topic subject, I notice that it don't seem to matter what the sudject is but it gets answered, look at a previous post about styled and unstyled JD's, wrong brand for this board but there was no brand bashing the last time I read it, try that on the other brand specific boards.
I was originaly looking for a MH or Ac but decided to look for a N series just because of how helpfull everyone here has been. Just My Opinion

Hey Bob, those guys over at the AC board are great too, I'm finding out I like the old Allis' a lot... I've had my NAA for a long time, but only recently discovered this and the AC board, mostly because of buying an 1951 B AC just recently and curious about some things as I had never owned an Allis before. I don't really mind repetetive posts, and always read even the off topic stuff 'cause most of the time it's interesting and I get to learn and see how people in other parts of the country do things. I don't know if it's necessary to change a format that apparently is working, is informative and just plain fun...

Andy- Maybe you get tired of hearing the same questions over and over, but I don't get tired of reading them and learning about this stuff over and over. . .If it really bothers you, don't read or reply to the repeats. I don't even own a Ford, I have all AC tractors, but come here because I like this forum. . .

If it really does bother you, you could start your own MODERATED board, and understand the immense challenges that would be required to filter out "repeat" questions. And not everyone knows about the archive option. . .you can get to this forum without coming through the front door so to speak.

I'm not trying to be rude or hateful, so please don't take it that way, but you have also asked several repeat questions about your new 8N yourself. Just be patient and help someone learn about a great pastime & preservation of the history of our country & agriculture background.

But hope it does not do to this board what it did to Overboard's Marinette site. I frequent thier site alot being a Marinette owner (boat). They had a system much like this one. Everday there would be between 15 and 20 post. As this site, most post were very good questions and answers. (a few exceptions) They went to a system where you have pick a topic, decide a sub heading and post. (the same for reading them) Now they get about 5 post a month (and almost no answers). This is a "GREAT SITE".

No matter what you do, you will not significantly cut down of the repeat questions. I have seen identical questions one on top of the other with the former having the answer. There are some people who will not read or search. It has to do with the makeup of people. Some expect everything handed to them on a silver platter. On the other hand there are those that try to figure out their problem by searching the archives and reading most problems and answers. I give the individuals credit who start with .."I searched for this, but could not find and answer to....." My motto has always been..."If at first you don't succeed, read the instructions..." BG has/had a very informative FAQ website, but I think he gave up on it because people just would not read it.. I may be wrong, at least that was the impression I got...

Not to say its not a good idea. When I found this sight (maybe 3 yrs ago) I had never "chatted" or been on a discussion forum. I was so elated that I read all the pages didn't see the answer and posted right away. Another thing is I'm so computer illiterate that it took me forever to figure out what all the talk about archives meant. Back then the search deal was not at the top of every page of the forum but hid somewhere over on the left side of the page.. Sometimes its amusing to see the details of some suburbanite's questions that has been hashed over at least a million times before.

I probably did have the first FAQ site. Don't know for sure, but I didn't give up on it. In fact, I'm in process of revamping the entire thing. Of course, it's like my tractor projects-you never finish. It's always a work in progress. But the killer is: no matter how much content, or how good the information, or how many graphics you use, it is never enough. It's difficult to focus in on FAQ's when more explanation is needed. You're right in stating that nobody reads it or if they do, maybe they just need the socialization that comes from posting and responding. In retrospect the FAQ's page is not a very good idea for a forum such as this. I was pondering this last night, thinking I should just go ahead and do a yearly log of my tractor project, showing each step I have done. The easiest thing of course is to pull it off the web.Last time I did that, the critics had a field day.

Very good point Claus --- maybe it is not worth the effort. I do enjoy the plethora of posts each day and I am eluding that we should stifle individualism.

I did not think deeply into the theory that most people may not have the drive to perform the searches nor the willingness to read an FAQ list anyway.

Hmmmm..... I guess with live on with the wa things are.

Ah, history repeats itself. A number of us have been around if not from the beginning, darn close to it have seen this come and go. As a result, a number of web sites have sprung up over the years. Neil's web site has a lot of info:

Link

Smith's Tractor Site has a bunch:

Link

tyman's site has some:

Link

There are many others. I know Bob Gaddis spent a lot of time on a FAQ's page (possibly the first) - only to realize the criticism "more is never enough".

It is truly a monumental task, some have come, some have gone, and some are still around. Even with all this info, the questions remain, and quite honestly, with the influx of new people, new perspectives, new personalities, and ultimately new friendships are formed, even thought many of the topics are repetative.

As far as off topics, variety is the spice of life. As long as they are somewhat relavent, what's the harm. You can always skip them.

That's my nickel's worth (which like a nickel, probably isn't worth much)

JU

Andy-
One more idea. What about an area for "off topic" postings? I know we all enjoy a good OT posting, but the replies always seem to take up 1/2 page or more.

3 replys in 3 minutes. Must be a record!

Thats what I always thought was needed not just because of the repetetive questions but also a quick referance and the archives are hard to search sometimes. Maybe one well written answer with maybe one or two pictures.

serve the beer.

haha.

I am also a active forum lead on a Toyota Offroad 4wd Forum and we have gone through many of the same repeat questions issues and OT problems. As soon as we get some idea of the level of support here on this forum, we can push for some modifications to make things better and more efficient for newcomers and their rank-&-file questions.

Just trying to help,
