OK, another newbie on the block...
Started to replace the rear axle seals on an early model 8/N and noticed that the cork seal ahead of the bearings (8N4284)was warped and loose fitting. I also noticed that the gasket behind the retainer (8N4225) is pretty dried out. On the JM Smith web page, he recommends replacing them both and installing EVERYTHING with permatex ultra blue silicone. Any thoughts on this? It seems that the axle seal is the weakest link here. If it starts to wear, oil is going to wind up on the brakes. Does that cork seal really help? Keep in mind that this model does not have an inner seal. Also, an ex truck mechanic said that cleaning the oil soaked brake shoes with laquer thinner and then scuffing them with sand paper would restore them to "like new".
I"m sure somebody has tried this. Let me know if it"s worth bothering with. New shoes were only $55 for the set of 4. Help me with this one and then we can get to the problem with the hydraulics...

Thanks, 8N-1201

When I got my 8N both axle seals leaked oil onto the brake shoes. The shoes looked like new otherwise. I washed them off with kerosene, wiped them down and dried them off with compressed air. I then took my propane torch and burned off the oil from the shoes. Did this procedure a couple of times until no more oil seeped from the shoes. Replaced the seals and cleaned up the drums. Brakes work like new and I can lock up either wheel without having to stand on the brake pedal. Seals should last you a long time considering the fact that the wheel turns at such a low rpm. One other tip is to not overfill your hydraulic oil.

Don't know what happened there, let's try it both ways.
