Collapsed carb float

If this isn't the strangest! I had disassembled a Marvel Schebbler carb typical of the type on an 8n. The top and bottom halves were spending the night in the dunk tank with the float and a few small parts sitting on the bench. During the night we had a heck of a wind storm with temps falling about 30 degrees. The elect power was knocked out about 3:30am. When the wind had settled down the next afternoon, I went back to finishing up that carb. But now both sides of the float had collapsed as it sat on the bench. Nothing had fallen on it. Fortunately my JD dealer can get a new float from TISCO.

I've been messing with this stuff for over 40 years, and I've never seen a collapsed float before. Do I need to disassemble the carbs on the other 6 gas tractors here to see if they have collapsed floats too??

Ya shurr, whood believe thatt?

It really did happen!

If you shake it, can you hear liquid inside? May have been leaking to the inside.

Try putting it in water that is near boiling, but not around any flame. If gasoline is inside it could catch fire. The heat may cause the float to "re-inflate".

If you hear liquid inside, drill a small hole, then put float in hot water to force gasoline out. Don't let water back in. Solder hole shut.

Be careful,

Roger,

Thanks for the idea about the hot water. I had not thought about that. The float had no leakage, I shook it when I disassembled the carb.

The storm during the night was probably the culprit, a real quick change in barometric pressure, and quick temp change. I seemed to think that when I disassembled the carb that the float was pretty light weight, like the brass was extra thin. I looked carefully for evidence of corrosion, but found none.

Thanks for the ideas.
