I recently replaced the gas tank on my '47 Ford 2N. I still have the old one which is rusted on the inside but does not leak.

Does anyone buy these things for refurbishing or does it go in the trash?

There was a fairly thorough article in the N-Newsletter a while back about treating a rusty gas tank. One product they mentioned was POR-15. I can't remember the other. I got a POR-15 kit for my 650 but haven't had time to apply it yet. I'd agree the tank is worth something.

There are places that can coat the inside of the tank to seal the rust and make the tank usable. Here in Maine it cost about $135.

Use old inner tubes and hose clamps to seal the openings after you've thrown a double-handful of old nuts/bolts in the tank. Put the tank in the back of the pickup truck for a month while you drive it around the place. Turn the tank over every once in a while so it rests on a different side/top/bottom. Remove the cap and dump the nuts/bolts out. Pour a gallon of swimming-pool acid in there, cap it off and slosh it all around. Go watch a movie. Slosh it all around again and pour it out, and rinse it out with water. Blow air in there to help dry it out and let it sit in the sun for a day. Pour some Ospho or other rust-conversion treatment (this is simply phosphoric acid, which turns the steel surface to black oxide) in there and slosh it around real good, and pour it back out and let it sit in the sun another day. Rinse it out with gasoline/2-stroke oil mix. You're done. Sell it or install it. After installation, keep it full of gas during storage.
