I have a early 8n that blows oil out the fill tube at high rpm or after it's been worked. It runs well and holds good oil pressure (30lbs) and does not smoke or use oil. I guess it could have a lot of blow by butI was wondering if there could be anything else that could be wrong. I'm wondering if it could have the wrong dipstick and be over full with oil or if it could have too much oil pressure or some other wierd thing I'm not thinking of. How long should the dipstick be?

You describe the classic symptom of excessive blow by past the rings. As to oil level: You might want to change the oil. It holds 6 quarts if the filter canister is removed for cleaning and is empty as a result. If you do this, you can then check your dipstick after adding 6 quarts of oil (might want to try 40w or 20w50) in order to verify correct level.

Greg,
Engine oil dipstick is 12 inches. Tranny dipstick is about 8 1/4 inches. That's good thinking that someone might have tried a one-size fits none. Another possible is the stuffing in the cap really gummed up. HTH

The stuffing in the cap is a good possibility. Mine looked pretty nasty but I didn't clean it up yet. I'll try that tomorrow.

I'll check the cap -- could the filler tube have been repaced with a shorter one by chance. I was just looking at a 2n and the tube goes straight up -- mine is curved and not as tall -- ideas?

Uh-oh. Can o' worms here in reply to Greg Lasher, 11-13-2005 17:14:34
The parts catalog lists 8N6763-B as oil tube, 9N, 2N, 8N, 1939 - 1950, 5 1/2 inches long. It doesn't list ANYTHING for 1950 - 1952. I checked my 2N and 8N. Both have a pipe that's about 8 inches (if I followed the curve) from the flat of the boss to the top. Add another inch or so for what's stuck into the engine.
The pictures in the parts book show a curved OUTWARDS pipe for up to 1950, i.e., frontmount distributor. When the 8N went to side mount distributor, the picture shows a SHORTER pipe that curves UPWARDS.
I would GUESS the 8N6763-B is actually the 5 1/2 inch pipe and perhaps a 9N part number or maybe 8N6763-A is for a taller (8 inch) pipe.
Now we're fishin' in the dark, ain't we?

Re: DIP STICK in reply to Greg Lasher, 11-13-2005 17:53:01
I followed the directions on the
dip stick and found that my pressure
would fall off to 10 or so PSI after
a short warm up. After I changed the oil and put in
the correct amount the pressure stays
at 30 PSI
