I restored my '47 Ford 2N a while back and in doing so I replaced the manifold gasket since it had a leak! I'm finding that the new gasket doesn't seal much better than the old one, probably because the manifold is slightly warped near the number 4 cylinder.

Does anyone know if stacking 2 manifold gaskets on top of each other will likely correct this problem or are there larger problems with doing so?

Thanks,

Gary

Gary..... ....you can try dual manifold gaskets but it ain't likely to solve yer real problem. Most of the time the block has ERODED around the #4 exhaust port. Because tractor engines usually operate at constant engine speed (governor) and usually near maximum horsepower, the exhaust gas is really HOT and erosive. Iff'n yer exhaust manifold flange is also corroded, buy a new manifold $50 (cheap)

And while experienced welders can weld castiron with nickle rod, it takes special heat controled ovens to prevent the castiron from cracking as it cools. And not only that, once you lay a bead of weld, you haffta machine it flat so the gasket will seal.

Me? Heres what I'd do for exhaust eroded ports. I'd use HIGH-TEMP epoxy. (while J&B Weld is good stuff, it is NOT high-temp but there is high-temp epoxy available, ya gottta ask) Drill a couple of shallow holes to act like rivets, then clean the eroded area (rotory sander and brake-clean) and puckey the block, clamp a board to flatten the puckey and letter cure for several days. $10 for hi-temp epoxy. Sure beats specialized block welding $$$ or even a new block. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

I didn't know they had an epoxy that would stand up to exhaust temp that close to the head! That's a lot easier than what I did. You can weld cast iron with a stick welder if you just lay down a bead and immediately bury it in sand. The sand will slow the cooling and keep it from cracking.
