I noticed in my seal kit 8 black rubber seals that look like garden hose washers. I have a gut feeling that they go on the valve guide just above the horse shoe retainer. Can someone help me out?? The engine came back from the machine shop with all the valve train and cam shaft installed, I had to re-adjust the rotating exhaust valves but there were no seals on the guides. Did they screw-up? Thanks RB

Are you sure that the machine shop even removed or replaced the valve guides? It is not necessary to do a valve regrind job.

No the seals do not go up over the horse shoe keepers. They go around the guide in a groove cut for them and only on the intake is it necessary. It will not do any harm to put them on the exhaust but will not do any good either. They do need to be on the intake guides to prevent vacuum leak by the guides.

RB..... ...yer flathead N-Engine should have only 4-INTAKE valve stem seals, (rubber washers) even though the rebuild gasket kits enclude 8 seals. DO NOT SEAL the exhaust valves. The heat of the exhaust valve will melt the rubber seal.

The intake valvestem seal is install first on the stem, then the one-piece valve guide, then the valve spring, then the valve spring retainer, then the split valve spring keepers.

The entire valve assy is held in the block with the horseshoe retainer.

My opinion, yer machine shop screwed up. Go back and complain. Insist on it being made right.

BTW, many engine rebuild instructions, don't even mention valvestem seals. They are an inovation of modern material construction and design. And they work..... ...Dell

Yes, they should have installed at least four of them. And no. They are just about impossible to install. People have different ways of forcing them in. I grind them down for a good press fit. You can get by without them but they should have at least made an effort.
