Battery question...

I have a quick question about a battery for my 47 8N...The tractor has been converted to the 12V system and I'm using the 12V square can coil in front. Right now I have a 12V deep cycle marine battery on it just so I can run it. I am ready to buy a battery for it that will fit properly. What size battery do I need as far as cranking amps etc? I want to make sure I get one that will handle the load. Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks for all the answers. I was kinda thinking it might not matter but then I didn't want to waste my money either. I'll get one here pretty soon. Thanks again.

Alvin..... ...batterys come in standardized sizes. Buy a battery that fits and you'll be just fine. 12-volt size 22 or size 35 fit.

Don't worry about the CCA or cold weather rateings. I do recommend you consider the merits of a real tractor battery, they's built for off-road bouncing environent. I'm impressed with (byte my tongue) John Deere labled batterys. I've installed them in both my Dodge Cummins Diesel pickemup and a 6-volter (size 1A) in my 8N.

Interestingly enuff, my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) just lists the N-Battery as p/n 2N-10655-C, Battery assy, domestic; 13 plate. Don't even tell you that it is 6-volts. Strange..... ..Dell

Dell, what might be considered "stranger-yet":

An older brother of mine, B-17 engineer is to scared, now, to simply call the VET Admim. and request 1-ea. Lowe's-type "jitney" 1-ea. Hydraulic apparatus to lift the thing.

COST: 12,000.00
Net cost..... ..... ..0.00
Freight..... ..... ... collect via FED-EX.
However, the batteries must be "GEL", Dell.

Good nite, Sir.

PS: He, Dick said: I will just buy my own.
Why?, says I: He said :That way I will know what I'm gett'n!!!!!

I use ya I know, wal-mart batterys the $39.95 ones that are around 650CCA. I have them in most of my tractors from the 8N all the way up to my biggest tractor with is an Oliver Super 88. I've never had any problems with them in any of my tractors, and when you have 15 or so that run you have to buy cheap if you can. LOL

I, too use the Dreaded Wal*Mart battery in mine, too. No problems. As a certified Wal*Mart hater, I hadda bite my tongue to do it, but the b***s put my Local Battery Supplier outta business! I don't have 15 runners, yet, but might before I get thru, hehehe.

Conventional wisdom is about 2 CCA's for every cubic inch of displacment.

Example... A 350 CID V-8 typically is equipped with a battery in the 550-800 CCA range.

So, any battery (in good condition) much larger than a garden tractor battery is actually adequate for the 120 CID engine you have.

It is easy to find a battery in the 550 CCA range for a reasonable price that will readily fit the battery box, and be "overkill" in rating for the little Ford.

I have good luck with automotive batteries in my little utilities, others report better luck with $$$ more AG/Industrial batteries. John Deere sells a very good HD battery made by Exide, at a fairly reasonble price, if you decide to go the HD route, and have a GREEN dealer nearby.

Bob,
So you have a rule of thumb for Diesels? I like that "2 CCA's per cubic inch"! New one to me, but makes perfect sense.
My 9n8n has a little car battery in it, but I have never had an issue starting it. My Fordson Major, on the other hand, just loves to eat those little batteries (220 CI diesel 4 cylinder). I just bought a Group 31, 925 CCA for it, and it works fine, but it may be overkill. It was close to $100, and I would like to save a couple bucks if I don't need all those CCA's next time.

I'm in COLD northern ND, and I would say for cold weather starting, it be more like 3 or more CCA's per cubic inch for diesels for reliable starts.

It is common with 885 CID Cummins to use 2-1200 CCA batteries.

My pickup with a 6.5L diesel (395 CID) uses 2-880 CCA batteries.
