Hard to start

My 47 8N was starting just fine for awhile. I changed the fuel sediment bowl assembly with the shutoff valve and now it seems like it's impossible to start the tractor without a shot of starting fluid. Once it's running, it runs fine and will normally start right back up if I shut it off and then hit the starter button. I don't understand why it will start with starter fluid and not without it. Any thoughts? I don't really know how starter fluid works though...

Sounds like you may have clogged up the line or the filter in the elbow with some junk when you did that. Starting fluid is hard on engines and can even blow the head right off the top of an engine. What it sounds like is happening is that your not getting enough gas on start up. When an engine is cold it need a really rich mixter of gas to get it to start.

Okay. So what do I need to do to fix this problem? I have disconnected the line from the carb and plenty of gas is pouring out of the line. I don't know how much is getting to the carb. It's enough to keep it running but I guess not enough to start...

Pull off the fuel line, remove the brass ell from the carb and check that screen. Doesn"t sound like the problem though. If you weren"t getting fuel it wouldn"t keep running.
Get a full charge on the battery. Pull off a spark plug boot and check to see if it will jump 3/16" to ground. Bend the plug wires and replace if they show surface cracks. Inspect the points and set them. Wire brush and clean all small wire connections and terminals. Replace any worn or damaged wires. Clean the battery posts and clamps and other end of the cables too. Crank the engine for a awhile and feel of the cables. If they are very warm or have hot spots on the ends, then replace them. Short and fat. 1ga positive and 2ga ground strap is ok if they aren"t longer than required. I got an 8N a few years ago that had a 58" positive battery cable. Don"t know what that guy was thinking but now I got a lot of big ol" battery cable out in the shop.
You should get a "full-pipe" flow out the fuel line at the carb. If the carb is clean and set up right then you set the throttle to 7 notches, pull out the choke, crank the engine two cranks or so, release the choke and it will start. If it doesn"t, then crank it again but no choke. Don"t choke again until you"ve tried to start it 3 or 4 times. If you choke very much at all it will flood and will not start. Cold weather makes it worse.

Pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good flow of gas there. You can also pull off the air intake tube and make sure that the choke flap is working as it should, if its not closeing when you choke it then that could be your problem.
