i went to pick up my 8n after i loned her to my dad(first mistake)only to find the resistor had gone bad. after a few pull starts and a new resistor we took the kid for a ride on the wagon behind the 8n only to run out of gas(second mistake) after getting fuel the 8 would not start so in a moment of anger i bypassed the resistor going 12 volts to the starter. she started and ran for only a short before BANG, all of that to ask can anyone please tell me how many ohms my restor should be and the proper voltage going into the coil.

Aaron..... .unfortunately for you, 12 volts on a 6 volt frontmount ignition coil will burn it out and there is no recovery except by new ignition coil.

There is no eazy shadetree mechanic test for faulty ignition coil. Ohm meters are not very accurate reading 0.7 ohms unless you have a $500 lab grade ohm meter. (I know, I worked in an electronics calibration Lab in my other life)

As for your frontmount ignition coil, if'n it is OEM 6 volt coil, you should read about 3.5 volts (2.5 min, 4.0 max) at the coil terminal with the points closed, Battery voltage with the points open. This is true whether 6 volt or 12 volt battery system with the OEM 6 volt ignition coil. Any other voltage is going to give you sparkie problems.

If you're still confused, you might want to consider checking the "archives" at the top of this most excellent N-Board. Read about the trials and tribulations of the electrically challenged..... ...Dell

you should have 3 to 4 volts at the coil (Points closed). I bought a ceramic resistor at Quality F&F part # 34841-020 and that gave me 3.3 volts at the coil without the old resistor in line.
