I have a Sherman step up/down transmission that I was thinking of putting in my 8N. For those of you that have one, do you like it? pros..cons??

Yes, I've always liked it, ever since I was 10 & 1/2 years old and could go fast!
It has been very useful over the years to adjust the tractor power to the work from when we were farming to when we built our house and now mow lawn or push snow or whatever else I can create.
I now own several variations of Shermans as well as 2 Hupps and 3 F&Ts.
You do need to be aware of the affect the Sherman has on the hydraulics and the PTO rpm.
Improper use can make a job more difficult and put unnecessary stress on your equipment.

I've got a Sherman overdrive in one of my 8Ns. With the way I use the tractor, brush hogging, blading drive and hauling firewood etc., it never gets used. If I had to run it down the road to move from field to field etc. I'm sure it would be a different story. Later, Lee

I agree with Coldiron. I have several vintage Ford tractors including a single 51 8N. Without the Sherman combo I would probably not keep the 8N around. The underdrive makes it very handy for some jobs. The overdrive, on the other hand, is only useful for "getting down the road" and the occassional time when you need to lift to operate quickly.

Though I've never actually tried this, plowing in overdirve low might work well because overdrive should make the draft control more responsive. Anyone tried this?

Over the 52+ years that I have plowed, I've tried straight 2nd, step-up 1st, straight 3rd, step-down 3rd and in some very hard dry clay, step-down 1st.
When it is all said and done, pay attention to your soil conditions. In straight 2nd, the 8N is a plowing fool.

It was an interesting thought but I defer to your much greater experience. Second direct it is for plowing.

have the high/low combo on my 8N. I also have a loader. My tractor is used mainly for snowplowing, logging, tractor road building and other woodsy things. The low range is very useful in the woods and for grading/digging with the bucket. I seldom use the high range for the way I use my tractor, but I am very very glad I have that low range. With a loader, filled tires & chains on the tractor 100% of the time, I never want to go flying around anywhere in high range!!

I have an over/under in an 8N with loader. It slows reverse down when in under so it has more power when dragging the bucket to level and gives more control when going into a pile of dirt. With it in over the 3 pt lift operates faster. I do like it!

If you have ever operated a more modern tractor your biggest issue with an N is likely the gearing - way too high in many cases. I don't have a Sherman in my 9N but if I could halve the gearing (shift) on demand it would be a HUGE improvement and greatly improve IMO the usability of the machine.

Randy, I don`t like my Sherman Combo, I love it. It is in my 51 8N while my 52 8N is standard transmission. The 51 can work circles around the 52 which by the way is a VERY low hour tractor in great shape. I may be putting one in the 52 if I can come up with the bucks to buy it.

I can't imagine my 2N with just a three speed transmission.... In my mind, having the overdrive makes TWICE the tractor out of it. It saves engine RPM's, fuel and extends engine life.

Yep, I DO like my Sherman!! duey

I have a "Step - Up" on my 2N. I don't use it a lot--sometimes for going on the hill and up to the woods. But I do use it on parades and on our clup tactor rides. I see it as a nice, fuctional, historical feature and wouldn't think of removing it. I also have an "Over-Under" that I will put in my 50 8N when we get to it.

I have a '46 2N with a Sherman cable shifted overdrive pre-transmission and a '49 8N with a dog leg shifted over/under drive pre-transmission. Both provide adequate functionality but when you get right down to it when I want to use the 2N as a "tractor" everything I do on it I do in regular drive. Its only when I want to use the 2N as a race car that the overdrive Sherman is of any real value....and frankly....2N tractors make darn poor race cars! The over/under in the 8N is another matter. I originally wanted it so that I could achieve the 540 pto rpms for shredding at full throttle instead of at approximately 3/4 throttle....but the practicality of shredding (at least in my neck of the woods)is that you're rarely every going to want to be at full throttle anyway...so its sorta been a waste for me as far as shredding goes. Plowing now....well....that's a different matter. The underdrive "seems" to give me some additional power (whether its real or imagined is debatable) or perhaps better stated seems to give me some additonal leverage in those areas of the field where the pulling gets toughest. The overdrive side of the 8N Sherman I never use....its just tooooo fast.....especially in 4th gear!!! Bottom line for me is.....I'll leave the Sherman's in-place....and use them where they "fit" the activity of the moment. I'd probably never install one on any other N I might own.

I have a step up in my 2N and I use it on occasion, mostly if I am plowing or grading and am looking for a little different ground speed. I really wish I had the 'combo' step up/step down, a 'granny' gear would be really handy on occasion.
Also, like Soundguy said its nice to have a 'Road' gear if you need to travel some distance.

Its not so useful when mowing or using other implements that run on the PTO since the sherman affects the PTO speed too.

I have a step up in my 2n. Have only used it twice. Once was to open her up in 3rd on a back road to see just how scarry you can get flying down the road on a 59 year old piece of iron with no rops, seatbelt, and dicey brakes and steering...

Other time was in a tractor parade. Straight gearing was incompatible with all the other 'red' units I was in the middle of. Had to keep clutching, or wind out in 1st.. or run idle in 2nd. I'st and over was just about right.

i don't have one myself, but i'm thinking a step down would work good with the rear mount snowblower. you need to keep RPM up to keep the blower turning fast enough, but then reverse is a tad fast. In "underdrive" it might be just the ticket.

You have to consider that the Sherman Step Down slows down your PTO speed at the same rate as the decrease in ground speed, so you really aren't gaining anything as far as being able to handle deeper snow. Might work or might not.

I use my 51 8N with Sherman combo and 5 foot bush hog mostly to make the first round or two before doing most of the work with my 55 860 with 6 foot cutter. I nearly always use underdrive, occasionally direct, but NEVER overdrive. This works well with my steep, irregular areas because the ground speed is very slow and the N is very maneuverable. I also use the N to cut large brush and very, very heavy areas because underdrive multiplies PTO torque significantly.

Neither really. Your bushhog is (probably) built to operate at 540 PTO rpms. If you put it in Sherman High, your PTO speed will be way higher than that, unless you really throttle back and then you won't have much power.

Similarly, if you are using Sherman Low you will have a hard time getting the pto to reach 540 rpms.

Your bushhog is designed to operate on the tractor's 'standard' gearing.

I live on a 20% slope. Without the 3 speed sherman the tractor would be quite unhandy. Usually stays in Underdrive.

Amen brother! I have exactly the same environment and no Sherman in my 9N. The standard gearing makes most everything exciting. Double your fun with a load on behind.
