I finally got this plow delivered and now I need to find a manual so I can set it up properly. Additionally, please let me know if I am identifying it correctly. The plate reads "Model 10-247". I thought at first it was IO and not the number ten. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll also posted this on the Implemenet alley site. Tnx.

Frank

OH WOW! That is so cool! Are you going to plow a garden with it? Or a bigger field? Be sure to keep posting as you get it set up and working!!

Frank-
Here's a picture of my rear disc and scraper. I am missing the front one and the jack stand but made one out of a pipe. The discs were 26" in diameter but for some reason mine is smaller in front.

The reason the front one is smaller is that it is worn down smaller. It is a common problem with those old two disc turning plows. It is caused by the fact that they are really hard to get to plow properly. If both disc are taking the same amount of bite it is prone to try to turn the front of the tractor to right and push the front wheel out of the furrow. The draw bar is made with the right draw bar pin on a drop down about three or so inches. The reason it is made this way is to allow you to turn it so that the plow is turned towards the left like a rudder to help prevent the plow turning the front wheel of the tractor to the right and out of the furrow. Loosen the plows draw bar and turn the draw bar so that the right hitch pin is moved forward to turn the plow left.

The other thing that is supposed to help prevent the plow turning the tractor to the right is the rear wheel that runs in the furrow behind the rear disc of the plow. Most of the time in order to prevent the plow turning the tractor to the right a lot of pressure will be required of the furrow wheen against the ground and this will tend to lift the rear disc more than the front disc and thus wear the front disc more than the back disc.

The best way to get a two disc plow to make you happy is to go buy you a two bottom plow and retire the two disc plow!

Believe me you will be way ahead of the game!

When I was a boy we had a 48 8N and I plowed day and night with a Sieco two disc plow which is basically the same as the Dearborn and the Ford two disc plows but with better seals and bearings etc and I can tell you from experiance that I would not be caught dead with a two disc plow if there was a two bottom plow available.

Also the disc plow does not do nearly as good a job of "turning" the soil. Think about it! the disc is round and the bottom of the furrow is going to be round. If you have the bottom of the furrow six inches that will mean that in between the discs the cutting depth is going to almost nothing. So what you are doing is making a lot of little shallow ditches with ridges to the top of the ground level almost and the field will look like the waves on an ocean in ripples when it is done being turned and then you are going to have a lot of discing with a harrow and drag to get it smoothed out enough to plant. All this harrowing is in the mean time packing the soil that you are trying to loosen up to plant!

Get a flat bottom plow!

Zne,

I have a two bottom plow for my VAC and I know how to use it. I also have a 4 bottom plow for my 70D. Both work well, but I find they don't have much to offer in a wooded area, as I spend most of my time re-setting the trip bottoms after hitting roots. I'd like to try this disc plow in that area.

Do you know where I can purchase a book or find a few photographs to aid in set up?

That is the one place where they can be better than a flat bottom plow. New Ground!
You still would do better though in new ground with a good scolloped disc.

Hey Frank-
Yes, it is called a Dearborn Disc Plow. I have the Master Parts list for it (although parts are no longer made)and an A/O Manual for the 10-80 earlier disc plow. Thw 10-247 was made from 1954-1956 and used in rocky or extra tough soil. There is a jack stand (pipe) to keep it upright when not attached and it had adjustable scrapers on the discs. Does yours have the scrapers? Not many used in these parts (Michigan)had to go to Ohio to get mine.

Failed to mention that no, it does not have scrapers, so if anyone has a lead one one or both that would be great. I could fabricate somethingt that would probably work in the interim if I knew what they should look like.

Also, does anyone know what manual number I would be looking for? I found a 12 page supplement at the n-news site. Is this the right literature for the 10-247?

NO! That is the incorrect manual for this implement. I can try to scan and send you the MPC and 10-80 manual or copy it and mail it you if you pay postage. Setup is same on any 3-pt. Cat 1 tractor. Tail wheel should be on a spring-loaded device by the looks of mine. I have not tried mine yet. about 9 degrees out now and some snow so will not get to try it until spring...let meknow what you want to do. Tim Daley (MI)

Tim:

I would really appreciate getting any information you can provide. I'd be happy to send you the postage and then when ever you can get it would be fine.

I did look at the listing of available reprinted manuals on the N-News archives that Tom-Pa provided.

___ Dearborn Plows Master Parts Book, 1955 (100)
___ Dearborn Lift Type Disc Plow 10-80 (12)
___ Ford Disc Plows Master PB 1960 (22)
___ Ford Disc Plows Supplement 4 to Master PB 1956 (14)

Link

Take a look and let me know if any of these might be appropriate. I still am confused by the large tail wheel rod and to where it connects.

Guys:

What is throwing me for a loop right now is the long (and currently bent) 1" rod that runs from the tail wheel to a point forward of the three point attach pins. Apparently this was used to guide or lock the tail wheel in a particular position after bolting to the tractor frame. Not sure how to configure this when using it on my other (non-Ford) tractors.

I'll try to rig a jack stand tomomrrow and then try it out in the back later on.

From what I've read in some Ferguson implement books & articles the disc turning plows were most popular in sandy soils like the middle east.

I've never used one, though, in fact I've never seen one around here(in NE Texas).

I believe that is what you call a two disk tiller plow. I had a Dearborne two disk tiller and it was a fine plow. It plows a little smoother than the traditional bottom plow because the disk roll as it cuts the soil whereas the bottom plow depends on the point of the plow getting into the ground. I have owned both and the tiller is a better plow in my view.

There should be a prop stand to help keep it in an upright postion so you can connect it to your 3 pt.

I have access to one of’em its “bout a 100 yards from me my grand’pal owned it. I have used it ‘bout 15 years ago and all I remember izz I hooked to it and went plow’in. Its belongs to my uncle and I know I could use it enny time I won’t to cuzz he has no use fer it , I plow hiz garden. All I use now izz a moldboard type cuzz it mine and I wanted to know how to use it. Zane gave me the tips on that type. I have thought ‘bout hook’in up to it and give it a nutter try. The soil here izz clay and may be its what I need. Like you I would like to know the benefits of this type plow and iffin they need enny type set up like the moldboard plow. Looks like they are a cut and roll deal and would be EZ’er to pull than a moldboard, do they cut enny deeper , are they better in grass or hard soils izz draft needed, I would like to know the deal myself. So let me know what ya find out, thanks HOBO,NC
