Got a couple of questions...first, what effect would a leaking exhaust manifold cause? I can feel air and see smut like stuff on the engine and head from an exhaust leak around the manifold. I was just wondering if this causes any real problems?
Second, how hard is it to replace axle seals? I have a terrible leak in both axles...fluid pours out all over the inside of my wheels when I drive the tractor around...I have to do something about this. I'm assuming I need to replace the axle seals...I have a 47 8N so I guess I only have outer seals.

It's not that bad a job. A couple of friends and I just did mine. Also a 48 8N. Had a tough time getting the hub off. Puller, heat, and tap with a large hammer. When it came loose if I hadn't read the tip about putting the axle nut back on the end of the axle. I probably would not be walking. DO IT! It came loose with a bang that made all three of us jump. No telling how much damage it would have done to my knee. It's really not that bad a job. Safety First. Every time. Bob

Replacing axel seals, brake shoes and associated hardware is not a difficult job but is messy and takes some time. If you have never done it before it may take one day per axel. I suggest that you purchase a video on the topic before starting. You 47 8N only has the inner seals. I have a 49 and have never been able to stop the seals from leaking. Come spring I am going to replace them again. This time I am going to wrap the axel with tefflon tape and build a dam of silicon glue before the bearing. This should stop the leak problem. If you do this you should pack the bearing with grease. This was Zane's suggested way of dealing with leaking seals on the early 8N's.

You need to address the exhaust leak, it could erode the block. More than likely you will need a manifold cuzz it will be worn thin at the sealing area. Look down a few post at Brake tool and in the center of the brake asy you will see the seal retainer held on by 6 bolts , remove then axle hub, brake shoes then you kin remove the seal retainer. I installed a seal in my old retainer are you kin git a new retainer. If I did not have a very good puller I would loosen the axle nuts (remove the wire c-clip locking ring around the 2” nut) drive it around sum to loosen the hub. Ones ya git the hub off its just dirty werk . I did bust a el-cheapo 2” socket trying to git the axle nut off a parts tractor to rob the wheel hub off of. it’s the first time I ever broke a socket in my el-cheapo socket set, I had turned down the socket to git the rear nut off the output shaft on a truck transmission so looks like It will cost me more to replace it with a goodin than the whole set cost me, I do won’t a 6 point socket so I got the excuse to buy one now. Iffin the axle nut izz 1-7/8’ it’s a two piece squeezem nut and you should try and take it off in two pieced outer nut first and then the inner nut, it would be nice to have a 6 point socket fer this cuzz the 12 point may damage the inner hex of the nut their izz not much to grab hold to.

Here's a link to the definitive rear seal replacement guide. BTW, If oil pours out when you drive around, you've probably got too much oil in the sump. Remove the lowest bolt from the round inspection plate on the right side of the transmission housing and let the excess drain out. You'll still have to replace the seals and replace/clean brake shoes, but nearly all of us early 8N owners have done it, and maybe more than once. Steve 8N 169302

A leaking exhaust manifold in the area of the exhaust port could cause some erosion or oxidation that would eventually "burn" away some of the casting. Leakage around an intake port would cause a lean mixture that would tend to increase the exhaust gas temperature an burn the exhaust valves.

Mine is a 2N so I know about 9N/2N axle seals but I can't help on the 8N seals BUT on the manifold, it needs fixed..Can affect the way it runs and will only get worse..Most likely it is leaking toward the rear..sometimes it erodes the side of the engine and has to be filled with JB weld or something similar then dressed down smooth to let the manifold seal like it should..Some have luck with using two thicknesses of manifold gasket to stop the leaking..Should use the brass nuts when reinstalling the manifold..torque to only about 28 ft lbs..Brass nuts will strip before you overtighten and do other damage..
