my 1946 2n will not start in the cold. its about 30F here in upstate ny and she wont start. i get a pop out of it, than try it agine and maybe get 2 or 3 pops, i think the record is like 10 pops before she dies, then i can't get her to start agine. i heard that the al-437 sparkers are a hotter plug, and i was thinking if this would help my problem.

Things i tried:
1) Starting Fluid
2)Fresh gas (line is not frozen, gas is gettin to carb,
3)the tractor has a 12 volt system so i had it hooked up to the jumpers wile truck was runnin
4)kicked it

Still Wont start
Thanks Phil

Phil..... ...the "hotter" AL-437 sparkies ain't just for "cold-weather", they're for all-year. Has to do with burning off the natural combustion by-products of gasoline. Of which yer no-lead gasoline seems to have more invisable deposits which "foul" the ceramic center insulator so yer lazy sparkies won't jump the gap and sparkle yer engine.

HOWSOMEVERS; change yer FLOODED sparkies to new clean and dry AL-437 is recommended.

After you gittchur engine running good, you can clean yer "bad sparkies", one-atta-time. So you will have a clean, dry set of sparkies to swapp-out next time you "flood" yer engine. (and you will)

And while your squarecan 4-nipple distributor ignition points may have "slipped" closed (gap = 0.015") or have invisable deposits on them, (polish the points with a dollar bill), MY MONEY is on flooded sparkplugs..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

You have the neatest "tips"! I am writing that one down, about polishing the distributor points with a dollar bill! COOL!

Martys right check the spark, if not a good blue spark maybe you need new points and condenser. With a 12 volt system it should start at 20 below with no problem.

Check to see it you are getting a nice blue spark. I bet your points are cruded up, burnt or slipped. Kick it again it should start at 30, my 46 will start on 6v at 10.

Temp has nothing to do with your no start problem. I am also in Upstate Ny and my '49 6v has never failed to start due to cold weather and it sits outside 24/7. It is easy to flood at low temps but by the time the first winter was up I had the routine figured out. Mine wants 1/3 throttle full choke and to be cranked a revolutin or so with the key off turn on the key while it is cranking and fires right off. Get it running at idle engage the PTO and go inside for a coffee while the transmission is warming.
