Gangue,

Wanting to stay away from the dreaded orange/red and tan/gray, I shopped around and found others for which I have not seen comment.

How does Massey Ferguson Gray compare to dark 9N, or to Light 8N gray? No particular brand question here...just how did the Massey Ferguson color compare to the Ford color in its day?

How does Massey Ferguson Red compare to dark N Red? Same question...how did the Massey Ferguson Red compair to Ford 8N Red in its day?

How about BPS Agri Systems Tractor & Implement Enamel 4431-13 Ford Gray? Any idea which Ford Gray it might be similar to?

How about the above BPS paint sold by Central Tractor/Farm & Family/Quality Stores? Mfg. by BPS Paint Co., Wheeling, IL, a division of The Valspar Corp.

How about the Quality Farm & Country Premium Oil Base/Rust Control Truck & Tractor Enamel?

The above mentioned paints are relatively inexpensive. Can be used with catalyst to increase hardness, and are recommended by the local NAPA paint expert in Staunton, VA when used over NAPA Synthetic Enamel 8098 quick-seal non-sanding primer (which is quite expensive).

I'm interested in your comments as to the colors and quality of any of these paints.

Thanks,

Paul

I do not claim to be a paint expert but I do know some of the basics. There are millions of different colors with different hues and saturation. Pick the paint that tickles your fancy and use it. Trying to use a computer monitor to assess color is futile since no two monitors will show a color the same. Time and elements will change color so looking inside your transmission will not give you the correct color. Who knows what the petroleum product did to the color? Colors are like religion. There are hundreds each claiming that they have the one and only true god. Happy Motoring

You got that right Claus, even paint from top manufacturers often varies in color from one can to the next. Beyond that, application technique, and amount applied per coat, noticeably affects the final shade of some colors.

When I restored cars we once had a problem concerning this. Sample paint panels were made for the customer, he chose one, more of the selected factory-mixed color was ordered, and his car was painted. When the customer came to see the painted body he brought his sample. Unfortunately there was an almost imperceptible difference in color between the panel and the car. Due to the value of the car(a Rolls-Royce) Dupont did a laboratory analysis of the paint sample panel and the paint on the car. The bottom line was that both samples were within spec., and that it was not possible to manufacture paint to closed tolerances. From a practical standpoint this is a subject where there are no absolutes. So as Claus said, pick the one that “tickles your fancy” and use it...Al English

When I paint my 8N I am going to use Quality F&F
Ford red and Lite gray. Then I intend to clear coat it with semi gloss polyurethane with a sun blocker in it. Most rust inhibitive paints use a fish oil base and are not compatible with being top coated with most other paints.( ask a body shop man what can happen) I learned that the hard way. You have to allow the under paints to dry for 3 to five days. Contact the paint manufacturer. They want you to use thier products and answer fast. I emaild Xorust and had a answer within minits.
