I have wheel weights on my rear tires held on by bolts with very rusted square nuts. Any idea, other torching them off how to remove them?

Randy...just be very careful that you know where your hand may end up, if it slips off the wrench. Last October 8, I received a deep cut to my thumb, which I should have stitched up, but did not. As a result, a lesion known as a pyogenic granuloma developed, necessitating some surgery, including the removal of the lesion, removal of the thumbnail and a skin graft taken from another part of my thumb. BE CAREFUL!!!

Get 8-point sockets at Sears (Craftsman). They"re made for square nuts. If you bust a socket, take it back for a free replacement.

Good luck.

I use my Dremel tool with a cutting wheel to take care of problems like that.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks guys, I'll use my cut-off tool. I was hoping that someone would say...."call company xyz, they sell square sockets for your air impact wrench.."

Well if you have impact sockets just try a few of them one will be very close but may need to be tapped on the just hit it with the impact gun. I've pul a lot of square nuts off that way.

Well - I don't know how big the nut is, or what sizes/types of impact sockets you have - but a 12 point socket WILL fit on the square head nuts...

Good luck,
Dan

Dan..... ...a 12-pt 1" socket ain't gonna fit a 1" squarenut, probably take a 7/8" 12-pt. Sumptin 'bout the square of the hypotenuse, mox-nix. Besides iff'n that squarenut is that "rusted-tite", yer gonnna round-off the corners of the squarenut and the inner-corners of the 12-pt at the sametime. While not common, I've gott a few 8-point sockets that fit squarenuts and they are "beefy". Loosen-oil and air impact wrench with 8-point socket would probably work and beat the cuttin' alternative..... ..Dell

I got a 36" pipe wrench, and a 3 foot cheater bar.
Works great on square nuts

If you are trying to save the studs, then try these methods...

Nut splitter ( chinese tool store has them cheap ).

Hacksay.. say 95% thru the nut.. but not into the threads.. up and down.. then use a cold chissle to split them from the stud.

Coud try same with a file or dremel tool.. then chissle..
