8N Oil Pickup Tube

First post. Lots of good info. I've inherited my grandfathers 8N. When my father last used the tractor, he said it was running fine and suddenly it lost oil pressure and a clicking sound could be heard from the oil pan. That was 5 years ago and the tractor has not run since. From what I've heard and read, the most likely problem is the oil tube has fallen off. I've read in several places this was common. However, I have not seen a proper fix described. How do you fix this problem so that it does not repeat?

Recently, I brazed the oil tube to the cast iron oil pump end plate. It worked great. Just be sure to have the oil tube properly located so that the large round pickup housing at the sump end is directly over and concentric with the oil drain plug and screen.

As Sound has said and also since it has sat that long fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and put the plugs back in. That way when you get that oil pick up fixed the top of the engine will be closer to being ready to run also.

Just make sure you don't try to start the tractor right after putting the oil in the cylinders. Oil does NOT compress and you can cause major damage. Much safer to put the oil in and let it set for a while then turn the engine over with the plugs out.

I had a similar thing happen to a 9N I had. Lost all oil pressure. I tore it apart and found the fiber gear on the oil pump lost some teeth. Got a oil pump rebuild kit. The replacement gear was aluminum instead of the original fiber gear. Took care of the problem.

Repair will involve dropping hte pan and replacing the damaged part(s) Keep in mind that usually you can't repair it.. that is..solder the tube back in.. generally it is a repair by replacement... might need align honeing too.
