As I read Kim’s tribute to her younger sister I thought about my childhood experience of growing up a little overweight (still am to a certain extent). The Darwinian philosophy of the survival of the fittest seems to manifest itself most vividly in the cruel nature of the carnal and uncaring hearts and minds of many youngsters and adults. I’ve been called every name in the book that has to do with being overweight; fat _ss, lard _ss, porky the pig, Arnold the hog, fat boy, greasy belly, biggon, just to mention a few. When we went out for recess at school I was always one of the last to be chosen to play on a particular ball team or other school playground game. I was often ostracized and ridiculed by other kids (and adults) for no good reason other than my weight. It is indeed very sad to know that we live in society that glorifies certain physical attributes and victimizes those who do not posses these attributes. Like cold hearted reptiles, we tend to zero in on those who are different and engage in the attack (whether in word or deed). Although Charles Darwin may have discovered some valid scientific facts, the fact remains that a world void of love, compassion and caring for others is indeed a world void of God and all His attributes. So, the question remains, are we cold hearted snakes full of deadly poison in our tongues or do we posses some inkling of a human conscience capable of expressing love and compassion for others? Kim, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time in your lives. It sounds like your sister was a wonderful person. What does this have to do with N tractors? More than you realize! Rick H. Ga.
