Just changed the king pin in my 49 front mount. I did it because of the infamous broken distributer cap. Question: How worn do these things have to be to cause this problem? The pin was worn maybe an eighth to a sixteenth and the bushing was worn paper thin on the bottom rear. Are the tolerances so close that a quarter inch maybe less would cause this problem? They radius arms appear to be straight. There were two spacers on the back side tight enough to require a little hammer action going back in. Unfortunatly she is not back together yet cause I put a slice in the upper radiator hose whilst removing what looks to be the origanal clamp. It was not a technically difficult job just really dirty and frustrating.

Now just one more additional thing to do to ensure you won't have a broken #2 dist post I your immediate future. Position a 1/8 inch thick piece of scrap steel on top of the left side (starter side of engine)of the axle support assembly (p/n 3029), so that the axle can not pivet down as far on this left side. You can weld a piece in this postion or use a 10 inch long, 1 inch wide piece bent in to a 90 degree angle and drill a hole for attaching to one of the front engine support bolts so that it is positioned on top of the support assembly.

This prevents the right side of the axle from piveting UP enough to hit the dist cap.

Cheap insurance, Jim

Your description of pin and bushing condition matches what I had when I did mine. Yup, no more broken dist caps. Steve 8N 169302
