Well I went and bought this 8N. Runs good, pedals aren't worn down, no smoke, starts easy, looks like original lights, holds the Howse mower up for over 20 minutes. Price $2200 w/mower.

Negatives. Right rear axle is leaking and needs a new seal and probably brake shoes. Tranny fluid is a little milky which I attribute to a split tranny lever boot. End of battery tray is rusted out and is currently held in w/bungee cord.

Any help in locating tray and rubber boot?

I read in a book that the 8N steering wheel has the 3 rods made of the same material as the circle part of the wheel. This on has steel rod going to bakelite circle.

Couldn't determine ser no without scraping paint, but from what I've read in the 8N books and on the various boards, I think it's a '49. I'll be able to get the number after it's delivered.

I've already ordered the parts and service manuals for it.

Congrats Ray, ---- great deal ---- welcome - as others have said...You might have a hard time debating which is more fun - working on the tractor or with it.

Welcome aboard and what a great find! I also run a 5' Howse and I love it. I got a very, very low price on it at $450 total brand new just 2 weeks ago, so I know you got a fabulous deal on the tractor.

Regards,
Andy

Good eye Dell. The picture w/o the starter was the 1st time I checked her out. Seems the rebuilder discovered the ring gear had a few teeth missing and if the engined stopped in the wrong spot, then starter spin but no start engine. They broke it apart and replaced the gear, then I was able to start and drive her.

Not getting any comments on the trany oil, so I will rest easy that there's nothing to be concerned with.

Seems I read on here somewhere that the torque on the rear axle nuts is 450 ft/lbs. What size socket do I need. I'm thinking of checking out a couple of pawn shops for 3/4" drive socket and the longest breakover bar I can find and a 6' piece of pipe to use for a cheater.

Nice tractor Ray, looks good. Instead of going to find a used 3/4 in, socket set, which probably will not have all the pieces..You can go to a flea market, and one of the new cheapie tool dealers that show up and get a new set for about $49.00 bucks..For as much as You will be using the set, there is no problem,,If I were using it for making a living, then I would get a good set. If I remember correctly, it is a 2" socket.
Good Luck

You done well, pilgrim, you'll go far. I can't see how you could do anything better with $2200. Sway-bars and an O.R.C., Dell will be proud of you, looks like you're ready to mow. If you have'nt mowed with one of these varmits before be sure and take a look see in the archives, and don't miss Nolan's classic tale. Looks like you got some pieces of a swingin' drawbar back there? Good job Ray, take care of her.

Ray, Great buy. What a deal. I don't know what you'll have more fun doing, work with the tractor or working on the tractor.

Viewed you photos and one thing that jump out at me was the oil filler location. On my '52 8N it is a little lower and further back. I think, but won't put any money on it, that you just might have a 9N or 2N motor.

Use John Smiths page to check the serial number when you get it cleaned up.

Once again great find, you'll have fun.

The oil filler is in the correct location, same as my '48 8N. The location your filler is is due to the sidemount distributor..moved gen to left side and had to move filler tube to make room for it...OK Jerry?

Ray: Nice looking new addition - sounds like a great deal also!!! Stopped and looked at what appeared to be an 8N last weekend - beat up sheet metal, real bad, looked at it and figured out is was a 9N or 2N in dressed in wrong colors - asked the the owner what model - he stressed 1945 9N - mentioned I was more into Farmalls, but thought the war years were basically 2N's - he gave me a funny look. He wanted 3700.00 and both axles were leaking, missing part of 3pt, tires were shot, and wiring looked like it was done with parts laying around the garage.

Congrats on your find!!!
Jim
