This is so far off topic,,, but,,, Retail sucks these days, in all the industry.

Well,, H E double L! Maybe I am getting cynical in my old age, but I really HATE retail people who either don’t know what they are talking about or just flat lie to you!!! My neighbor, who happens to be a legal Mexican living in the US, wanted to put up a simple TV antenna. So, I called the local Rat Shack and they told me they had the antenna there in the store. So, we drove up there to get it.. Of course not the one we needed,, which is a simple UHF/VHF antenna, popular in the US.. So the manager or what ever he is, said he was going to lunch in a few minutes and would stop at another store and pick up one.

Neighbor and I went back to his house, put up the pole, the antenna clamp on house and ran the cable into the house. I left to get some dinner and he went to get antenna.. Came back and as I was finishing up eating he opened the box. When we started assembling the system, it was just an UHF part for some antenna.. Nothing like we needed or like we had requested, WITH the part number..

Grrrrr… So, got the right part number, again, then spend I know 25 minutes on the phone with yet another manager who assured me SHE knew what she was talking about and more importantly what I was talking about.. Said they did not have that part in house and would have me one in store on Monday…. Jeeze,,, Never one word of apology, … nothing about how sorry they were that I had to drive 30 minutes up there.. Tell you what, that part better be in the store Monday by 5 pm, as promised…

Whew,, Ok, I feel better now…

OK off soap box now… BTW, I did get great progress made on putting in the cabinets and workbench in the barn/shop today. As soon as it warms again here in Texas will finish it up and post up pictures.. Warm in Texas again, today we set a record high of 88 degrees DFW area, and the bottom falls out the next couple days.. good ole Texas weather,, like they say, if you don’t like it, just wait 10 minutes.

Yea, the weather. Can't believe your weather either. A few years back I fished a bass tournament on lake Texoma. It was about 28 and snowing when I left the ramp (wearing everything I owned) and by mid afternoon, I was literally down to a T-shirt and burning up. Couldn't believe such a drastic change.

First, thanks for letting me rang and rave.. Whew, I do feel better after a good nights rest.

And Dave H,, I am south of Fort Worth Texas, guess it would be somewhat of a drive to come get yours, but thank you!!!

And Cargocult, you said it,, big box stores have ruined the local merchants. Personally I won't go to Wally World if I can avoid it in any way.. I did consider it being the person behind the counter as the problem it was everyone in the store. You do know they work on commision there don't you? But, it is not like the store is just down the street, while it is not real far, driving into the big city of Arlington or Fort Worth I did not feel it was worth the price of gas to do so. Especially when I was told the part was in the store of my choice AND they even offered to pick one up for us...

Someone suggested an antenna rotor,, I have one, but we live in line of site of broadcast antennas, which are all on one hill, I can see the ligths at night. I have rotor for tuning in distant stations out of the area but the neighbor does not need nor want one. And a rotor with out an antenna is just a place for birds to roost on ! :-)

Thanks again guys and gals,,, And Dawn.. find the link to the Texas highways magizene,, they will send you some bluebonnet seeds free!!!

Where you at? I just took mine down off the roof last year and it's still sittin out there upside down on the lawn with the rest of the stuff I haven't been able to make myself get around to. I think one of the aluminum cross pieces broke on it but the rest were still there and it worked when we took it down. Yours if you want it.

This is typical!! Blame it on WAL*MART and their fellow Big Box Retailers!! And the Gummint for their policies that make these pirates possible! Radidio Shack is not as bad as Wal*Mart, but damn close!! And gettin' worse, every day! Mostly they don't pay enuff to get the good folks, and the ones they get are overworked! The Good Local Small Merchants are going fast! These are the folks that supported Community Causes, advertised on Local Radio Stations (Another dying breed!!!)and were always hit up for ads in the school' sports programs & yearbooks! He**, the other day, I went thru my local High School Yearbook and looked in the advertising section...most of them are gone now!!! This is bad!! These folks are (were) the salt of the community, they gave it stability, and would go outta their way to serve their customers. And, most of the $$ thye made, they spent locally, unlike The Evil Chain Stores that send most of their Ill-Giotten Bucks to HQ! Which is usually outta state!! GRRRRR!! And the Repair Parts situation is getting critical! Most of them won't stock any more than the most common wear parts, liek filters & blades, etc. The Good Local Merchants used to stock all the parts needed to repair the machines they sold! Sure, this was a drag on their profits, but it meant that one could get the parts to fix the stuffs they sold. Unlike these *#&^$%BIGBOX places thaty are run by number-crunchers, who seem to think that if it doesn't sell in a week, it should be dropped!! The EvilGummint encourages this, by taxing inventory, which discourages parts stocking. Maybe I've lived too long, but Modern Life really bites!! In my area, I can count over 40 good Local Merchants that went outta business when the Evil WAL*MART came to town. I really miss these folks, because WAL*MART won't do the things they did. Oh, well, ain't a doggone thing I can do about it, except rant!! GRRRRR R!!!

Ole Country Boy
In my experience it it the person, not the store name that counts. Several times i have run up against a brick wall dealing with store clerks. Go to another store with the same sign out front and the people are very helpful.
About 3 years ago, after retiring & moving from the big city to a small town I bought an old tractor, both as a toy & for plowing snow. This was an orange tractor formerly built in Milwaukee. Anyway, went to the dealer up the road & asked for ignition parts to tune it up. Charming young lady went to the shelves, & brought out the parts I needed, without asking more questions, or even needing to look up part numbers. price was reasonable too.
Couple months later I went back to get hyd cylinder seals. She looked at cylinder, grabbed the seals off the shelf. Said "one seal is tricky to put in, I'll have the boys in shop do it for you." Ten minutes later she was back, cylinder ready to go. Total cost - 4 bucks. Can't beat that for 2 seals plus installation.
The big problem is finding people like that who know what they are doing.
To all tractor nut out there, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukkah, or Bah-Humbug, pick the one that applies to you. And Happy New Year.

Radio Shack has a pretty good website and I use it before I show up at their store front. Lot of product info, install instructions, and stuff that gets me all lined-out so I don"t go off half-cocked. It will even show which of the two local stores has the item in stock. I almost rather take a beating than go to the mall. Sometimes, when the mall store has what I want, I might call the other, park right in front just nextdoor to my grocery store, store, tell them what I want and they can go to the mall and get it over to their store so I don"t have to deal with the mall and I can pick up some cookies and stuff too.
My bad....

Rail against the MACHINE...they use it on you...use it BACK on them!!!

With the extensive use of satelite,
cable, and now DSL, Antennas have been very difficult to get. Try
getting an antenna rotor...

I found the best source was e-bay. At least you can see what you are getting. The rotor I got from ebay
came from Home Depot. Imagine that.

It's people in general, if it's not about them it's not important. Heck just the other day someone offered some info here on this site, so I wrote them back for a number and you'd have thought I insulted them , no courtesy, no rspect, just blew me off. Now that's not the norm at this site but just shows ther are a--h--es everywhere.

I bought a printer from Circuit City 30 days ago. Some thing jambed and in my impatient way broke it trying to fix it( hmm... that seems to be a recurring issue here). I took it back without the receipt to see if I could get it fixed. No it was under warranty and she was able to find my name in the 'puter and said that it was a thirty day store warranty so she got the manager to sign the OK. to replace it with a new one!!! When he came he said NO, there is only a 14 day warranty on the printer. Store policy!!!!.... After talking to the person that waited on me for a minute , he came back and said while it did have only 14 day warranty , because the clerk had told me it had a 30 day warranty he would honor her words. Bammm!!!!!
Didn't need to, just cared enough about someone else's problem, and did what he could to help....
There ARE some good people out there and btw they weren't old farts, as this was a young early twenties clerk and manager.
I guess the bottom line is don't be one of those that get bad revues, make a differnce for the good, in all you do. Thanks all for your support in my tractor problems , GOD bless, Barry

On the other hand. . . in reply to Ole country Boy, 12-03-2005 19:37:39
. . I *DID* have a good experience at NAPA this week... looking for a radiator (Olds) and after driving to the store only to learn that I didn't have enough info, I called in to the same guy. He said he'd check a couple other suppliers to see if he could save me a buck or two and then would call me back. Yeah, right, I'm thinkin'... But he *did* call back in about 20 minutes. This is not a small town NAPA, deep in Santa Ana, CA. Sometimes, people DO deliver, and it is a nice thing to see.

It's a people thing, not a brand or store thing. Just my recent experience. duey

I know what you mean. You call first and tell them you live 30 miles away and this seems to mean nothing to them. Another thing that pisses me off is calling a business and being told the person I need to talk to is "on another line" but can "call me right back". I sit by the phone for half a wasted hour before going back out to get something done. They call back four hours later and act confused and hurt when I chew them out for wasting my time.

It's not limited to one type of store... It's becoming like that everywhere you havea counterperson. int he old days.. the counter person at the tractor dealership.. or the parts house could tell you what you needed.. how to put it on .. etc.. Nowadays the people at radio shack just know about whatever new cell phone is out... and that knowledge is whatever they read off the box..

Gosh, I remember those Blue Northers!! If it's anything from the system we've sent on from here, button up and pull out the woolens. (Hey, come spring I might ask you to send me a bluebonnet or two.) :-) (Oh, and I drove 57 miles yesterday to go to a store where the man said he had chains precisely for MY size of tires, as I managed to lose one this week and broke the other. Guess what was not right when I got there? Yep. I'm with you on people not knowing, not caring, and not trying very hard!!)

In years past there were small shops and stores that had people who knew something about the products they sold. There were few customers out in the rural areas so they were treated well.People run to the malls for everything the need now.The small feed dealers and lumber yards that existed are gone now. When I was selling and installing tv antennas I knew exactly what was needed to do the job right.

Yeah, you are exactly right. And it seems the differences between working for a gigantic conglomerate or owning and running your own business are more insideous than we'd first realized, back in the days of the first "super markets". Odd, isn't it, how it goes?

I got a nice surprise yesterday when visiting the small town where I was born. Its in the bush in Ontario Canada. I noticed a new steel structure going up on the edge of town and asked what it was. Well wally mart owns the property but they can't build so it will be something else. Smaller. Strange, I say and ask more questions. Seems the mayor and local council want to protect the local merchants. A Canadian Tire, MacDonalds and Tim Hortons is enough. Good for them.

Encouraging news, indeed! Wal-Mart has driven all but taken over ALL OTHER grocery store trade in the two towns where we shop. There is only one option in one town, and none in the other. And if you think they ought to carry something they don't have? Forget trying to talk to anyone. It's all "at the corporate level, and you have to call our main office in Arkansas." And THEY don't listen. (I tried.) :-(
