Last month, the membrane ruptured in our home water well tank - and since it was the non-replaceable kind I had to buy a new tank.

I think I've figured out what to do with the old 36-gallon tank, though. I'm going to cut a round hole in the top and make a lid to fit it. I'll cut the membrane out and remove it. Then, I'll weld fittings on to the top and sides of the tank so it will fit my 8N's three-point hitch. I'll neck the bottom outlet down to a 3/4" pipe and attach a common water faucet - and then I'll have a watering bucket that can be filled with a garden hose at the house and carried by tractor to plants and new trees that are too far out to reach with a hose. (We live on a 6-acre place.)

The weight won't be a problem, I figure it should only weigh about 360 lbs. when full of water. I'll probably even attach a short hose to make it easier to water plants. I'll take and post pictures here of this project when I build it. What do you think of this idea? Has anyone else built one of these? Any suggestions? Thanks, - Sam

That is a great idea, indeed. Nothing wrong with scoring a few points with the wife by using the 8N either. Lots of bushes and trees quite a distance away from the hydrants. I'll be interested in seeing the finished product as well.

I use a 100 gal poly tank I got from Northern Tools with a roller PTO pump. Strapped it to a wooden pallet so I can back the 3ph fork under it and away I go. Works great for access to those remote flower beds of my wife's. The pump is good because the gravity flow takes a good while to empty the tank. Last summer was so wet here I didn't have to use it but I'm betting this year will be different.

Just a thought...I think you should come up with a system to catch rain water off a building to fill your plant waterer.

Sam, I have basically the same thing that I use for alot of different applications, Mine is a platform that is wide enough to hold 2, 55 gallon drums, however instead of gravity drain I run mine through a pto driven roller pump. That way I can pump to things I cannot drive to and in dry years I can fill out of a pond or stream and not tax my well. LOL let me know if I can help with the pressure relief aspect.

How about using a ball valve for the discharge, you know the ones with a straight handle? You could use a choke cable to open and close valve without getting off the tractor.---Michael

Hi Sam. I use a 55 gallon drum to add weight to my box scraper and straight blade and plow.
36 gallons x 8.34 pounds per gallons comes out to 300 pounds.

Should work just fine for weight Sam, I've moved 55gals. of diesel around with my forks.

Just thinkin'..... I believe have seen platforms (and also lift forks) that attach to 3-point hitches for general carrying of items. You might get or make something like that, then set the tank on it. Could be used for other work in addition to hauling the tank. What ever you end up with, try to get pictures to encourage the rest of us. Just my 2 cents worth (or less)!
