Identifing problems?

I bought a "N" tractor at an auction yesterday and I am trying to nail down the exact year. As best as I can tell, it is a '46 2N with a '48 8N engine.

The block has the embossed "8N" with a "D" below it. The serial number of the engine is 8N116986.

The rest of the tractor has the following: oval radius arms, round transmission shifter cover, and there is an emboss of the forward right rear axle housing with a date of 4-1-46.

Is there any way of actually determining what overall serial number this tractor is? Or should I just be content knowing that it is probably a '46 model 2N?

Just an addition to my original post. The serial number on the engine is correct. I scraped all the paint off and was able to read it easily by looking at it in the dark and using a flashlight.

Additionally, the tranny is 3 speed, the rear rims are 6 bolt, and the engine has a front mounted distributor. All the sheet metal is there except a front bumper, although most of it is dented.

I guess I will start with the tear down and see where it goes. If anyone has any quick opinions for tear downs and rebuilds, I would be greatly appreciative...

Outlaw..... ..what Carl said..... .congratulations, iff'n yer correctly read the weakly handstamped engine s/n you have the "braggin' rights" to a 1948 8N engine.

ALL N-Engines are "interchangeable". So it is not unusual to have an engine swapped instead of rebuild. Ain't no bigg thing. Doesn't effect the value of the tractor, unless yer a sphincterly challenged tractorially correct inspector.

And surprizingly enuff, there ain't many s/n specific changes that arn't intuitively obvious. The change from 4-nipple frontmount distributor to 5-nipple sidemount engine. ...or... ONLY 8N's have 4-speed trannys. The hydraulic lift is the same. So you really have 'nuttin' to really worry about.

Recommend you squander $22 of yer lunch money for an I&T FO-4 manual..... ..respectfully, Dell

You didn't say whether it had a 3 speed tranny or a 4 speed. 8N's have 4 speed forward, earlier models (9N, 2N) only had 3 speeds. The engine serial number is on a 1x4" flat spot on the left side of the engine just below the head towards the dash.
I believe someone here on the forum said that if you lie on back under your rear axle you can read a date code there that should help pin down the manufacturing date a little more precisely.
Check out John Smith's excellent identification pages.
Carl S.
