All this talk lately about replacing condensers and most of the new ones being junk, Anyone know where I can get a quality ( possibly NOS) condenser for a sidemount and frontmount distributor?

Condensers used in 49 to 60s ford were oil filled. This kept moisture out. These condensers are marked fomoco and had a spot of solder on the end of the case.I found some of these that I saved when I did tuneups in 56 57 58 when I worked in a Ford garage.I had a radio shop at home and used the condensers on Auto radio noise.I tested some nos condensers I had, most were ok.The used fomoco condensers I saved 50 years ago tested good.Saw many complaints on an early ford site on new condensers failing so I tested condensers I had, plus bought 8 nos condensers made for 49 to 54 Fords,All tested good and capacity was right on at.22mfd.I test auto condensers for leakage at 400 volts. Old ford service bulletins say testing should be done at 250 volts.I use the higher voltage because condensers that test ok at 250 volts act up at 400v.You cannot use an ohmmeter to test condensers. You might catch one that is shorted or open but this rarely happens.Ive been testing condensers for 55 years now.

When i said driesd out.. that was what I refer to.. a poped or leaky cap loosing oil charge. I've seen dozens of them...

Looking at components, and vintage electronics.. units with heating elements(tubes), and caps are my my biggest replacement parts.

Auto condensers do not dry out. They fail because moisture gets into the condenser.Ford autos used oil filled condensers in the 50s and 60s. these are the best if you can find them.I have 7 delco condensers nos that test good. Also have a model B ford condenser that tests good.It is at least 50 years old.

Good point about the NOS. I worked in an auto parts store about 25 years ago. We used to charge the capacitors, put them carefully back in their box on the shelf then go to a phone a call the new guy counter person, tell him we were looking for a capcitor and could he see if it was in stock. Ah... the laughter we got out of that!!!

I would really recommend that you search the archives.... someone posted a list of tune up parts that were mostly bluestreak brand... good stuff and available at good automotive places...
A little extra money, but well made and they last.

even though new caps can be bad 'by the box'.. I wouldn't want to try a NOS condensor... A good chance a NOS cap would be dry by now.
