Just replaced several 60 and 75 watt bulbs in our home with 'energy saving' mercury bulbs that we picked up at Walmart. I am really impressed by the amount of light that I get from a meer 13 watts of energy. Cannot tell any reduction in lighting. So far, I have only replaced those lights that we use most often (porch lights, and living room), but think I just might go back and get enough to do the entire house and garage. Inital cost is about $2.50/bulb, but at 1/5 the wattage, I can just hear the savings returning to my bank account. Ka-ching, Ka-ching....Ron

I agree with Dell. Too bad I have no idea what he said. I was thinking of putting them in my pole barn. But I"m not sure they would start up during a Wis winter. Anybody know for sure? Craig

The package says "reliable start to 5 degrees F." Don't know how that would relate to winters in Wisconsin, but it sounds like your winters would be a little colder as a rule. Here in Ohio, we might get an occasional zero to -5 degree F day, but as a rule, we don't get much lower than 10-20 degrees F.

AT 5 deg I probably should be inside the cabin. Heck with looking for the tractor in the dark. Probably there somewhere in the corner. Burrrr.

Dell can you explain the electrical theory in reply to RoNofohio, 12-06-2005 11:52:13
I remember my high school shop teacher explaining how "something" is out of phase with "something else" so that the power used cancels out to a minimum usage. I believe it inductance and capacitance?

edk..... ....fancy electronics engineers call that "j-omega". (which is pi x frequency) I'm so oldfashioned I call it inductive reactance (X sub-l) and capacitive reactance (X sub-c). Reactance is an AC (frequency) phenomenon and is quantified/measured as ohmic-resistance. When Xl = Xc, all you have left to the equation is OHMS as in pure resistance. Unless you're looking for HEAT, you generally want minimum DC resistance for all electrical circuits for maximum efficency. That goes for housewiring as well as radio electronics stuff..... ...Dell

When we moved into our house the electric bill was way too high, we had a guy from the power company come over and evaluate our usage. He gave us as many of the florescent bulbs we wanted (for free), The light is good and they are cheaper to operate, why not use them?

After the power company guy left I realized I did not mention the other (electric) water heater in our "mother-in-law" apt. I keep the water heater off now when no one is staying with us. What a difference!

Been useing them for years now in the horse barn where there on 24-7. They last a lot longer and guess save a few $$. Also been switching them as light burn out in the house but in some places they just will not fit. I like the light they put of.

I've seen them for some time, but never really trusted them to give the amount of light I have become accustomed to. But I was wrong. I just don't understand how they could get so many lumans from 13 watts. And I always thought they were neon gas, but nowhere on the package does it say that....Ron

they both convert eletricity to light and heat, you may have noticed how much cooler (still warm, but not 3rd degree burn warm) the flouresents are. less electricity being wasted as heat.

Just don't throw 'em in the hole in the ground when they're finished. They have mercury in them and they'll pollute the ground water. Take 'em back to where you bought 'em for recycling.
