After plowing heavy sod, with a few sudden stops from small tree stumps( broomhandle size), my '50 8N has developed a noise. No noise in low range, noticable in mid-range and even more in high range. Sounds like cluk-cluk, gets louder when I turn hard right.I drained the trans oil found no shavings. Any ideas? Oh yes, like a fool I was in second gear.

I bet it's the spider gears in the rear diffential. A tooth probably chipped off when you hit a stump. If you were using low range there is more of a change for rear end damage since low range allows you to transmit more torque to the rear wheels. My dad had a tractor that made a similar noise in high range.

not enough info in your post to nail it

try jacking up both rears at the same time and see if it makes noise with the trans in neutral and if not then try the gears one by one

results of that ought to narrow it quite a bit

your mileage may vary

I'm not exactly shure what you mean by, 'No noise in low range, noticable in mid-range and even more in high range.' Do you mean 1st gear, second gear, and 3rd gear? Do you mean low, mid and hi throtle? If your talting about the throtle, is the noise there in one gear or all gears.
