Second Jubilee question in a 3 part series....My new Jubilee was exhibiting a "Squeak in the rear axle nut area..On closer inspection I saw the retaining clip was in fact on the nut and in position to prevent the nut from moving....but...there was a space between the nut and the hub ..in other words the washer was spinning freely and there appeared to be about 1/8 inch space between the nut and the hub...I removed the clip and torqued the nut down to 450 ft-lbs to see if the squeak would go away...it didn't....My question is what would happen to cause the space between the hub and nut if the nut did not move....Am I in for a big suprise when I take it apart or may it be a simple thing (yeah right)...Any help suggestions greatly appreciate.....Thanks...Alan

Experience tells me that since your axle nut was backed off that probably you had enough slack in your hub assembly that it probably at some point hit your brake assembly. This in turn probably knocked some things loose in the brake assembly namely springs. I had this happen and the springs scrubbing on the brake hub sounded awful. I'd almost put my money on it with the info you've given.....

Alan The hub and axle are a matching splined taper and they are known to do what you've discovered. The nut has not moved but at some time the axle started to move a little in the hub and it wore itself and the hub until it had the play you saw. My 8n was the same, one side was tight and the right one was loose. I cleaned everything up and torqued it up. I intend to watch that side and periodically tighten the nut. If it continues to loosen it will be ebecause the splines are a bit worn and it allows the axle too much radial play. If this is the case,I will have to replace the set. I thought it worth a try as I have nothing to lose by trying it and watching it closely. Good luck.

It could be anything from a bearing to loose lug nuts to the brake shoes scrubbing. Try to isolate the sound at different rpm and loads and when turning both ways, backing up etc.
