Near as I can tell, if you got a 6v front-mount the belt is spose to be 46-1/8" by 5/8". If you have 44-1/8" belt (NAPA NBH A42) that is because it is running in the middle of the pulleys and is the wrong belt. Dell says that will tear up the pulleys because they run hot. The 12v front-mount is also a 5/8" belt but it is shorter because the alternator pulley is smaller. That would be a 44-1/8" belt; by 5/8" and not 1/2".
Now, there is the 6v side-mount belt that is different and Dell says he sees a length in the MPC but I don"t see a length in the MPC. Anyone direct me to where the length can be seen in the MPC? Page number? Figure number? Something?
But what I really want to know is the length of the 5/8" belt goes on the 12v side-mount. Can anyone help me out?
Don?

I use the stock belt 42”X 5/8 on all my 12V conversions, best I kin remember belts are measured on the out side of the belt, Not all conversions are the same so use the rope trick to git’ya in the ball park. Correct pulley izz 2 1/4” X 5/8 but my tape measures ’em at a little less than 2 ˝’ and they aint cheap either

Rob, when I put the alternator on my 2N, I made my own mounting bracket, and I found a pulley in the drawer that could be disassembled (it was crimped together on a smallish hub). I stacked the pulley sheave halves on the alternator shaft and spaced them appropriately. The I selected a belt (through trial and error) that keeps the alternator close in enough and out of the way of the steering arm.

It has worked without a hitch these several years now.

My point is this, there are a NUMBER of variables, (including a "Live Thang"), for which a parts book cannot account. And in the end, I believe, you will want your alternator or generator to:

1) not be resting on the manifold

2) not be not be getting whacked by the steering rod.

Beyond that, who cares what the MPC says??

Other than NOT running on the bottom of the pulley, I don"t CARE where the belt rides. I don"t get much above half throttle very often anyway.

My 2 bits worth. . . duey

Yeah, you can put your alternator anyplace you want. Kinda. But most people will put it back where the generator came out. But it might be ok to have the alternator hanging out farther. I suppose the alternator would be easier to work on that way. :) Maybe not. :( I imagine the kits aim to get it back real close.
My tbird puts out 4% to 6% more HP after changing pulley sizes and ratios so that stuff does matter that way.

Don't know if it helps or not. My 9n belt is 21/32" X 44". But here's the thing. Because alternator mounting brackets and alternator pullys vary in size, your's might be different. I had to put a shorter belt on because of the little alternator fan blades hitting the steering knuckles and breaking off on some turns. HTH...Ron

Yep! That fits what I believe I have figured out.

The 12v front-mount takes a 44" belt. That 21/32" is a lot better, closer to the correct 5/8" than the 1/2" wide belts for sure. I bet that 21/32" is close enough it just doesn"t matter none.

Thanks.

Rob..... ....my N-Ford MPC lists the OEM 6-volt sidemount belt as p/n 8N-8620. And I have a hand written note that it is 5/8x41.

V-belts transfer their power thru the SIDES of the Vee to the pulley, not the bottom of the Vee.

As to yer current delima, your alternator needs a 5/8" pulley 'cuz you can't fitt a 5/8" belt in the 1/2" alternator pulley. Understand? And you need a 5/8" V-belt because your crankshaft pulley and your waterpump pulley are NOT changeable; but yer alternator V-pulley is changeable. I believe it is 3" diameter x 5/8 vee.

And there is nothing wrong with using a string or 1/4" rope to measure the length of vee-belt you need. Simple, eh?..... ..respectfully, Dell

Do you use the string to measure the size around the base of the pulleys or around the outside of a good known belt? The difference would be 2 pi times the belt thickness.

Looks like your 41" for a 6v side-mount is correct or real close to it. I found my post from 2-1/2yrs ago I was trying to fit a belt and the 42-1/2" belt was just loose at the end of the adjustment.
Now I"m thinking the 12v side-mount will be 2" shorter so 39". Don"t know for certain but I would like to know for certain.
I do know if a guy measures the pulley diameters and the distances center-to-center the belt guy at the bearing supply house will calculate it and get the correct belt for the set-up. I see where they even have calculators for download. http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/software/84710/

No...my current delima is that it"s 3* out there; too cold and the snow is too deep to go look! Just don"t want to do that. Besides, I had hoped to get it right for a record in the archives because those posts are all over the place.
I bet someone knows. You may be right on that 6v side-mount being 41". All my pulleys and belts are 5/8" as is, thank you.
The wide-belt alt pulleys are going to be 2-1/2", btw.
