As Tom says, you need to clean it out. I recommend also getting in there with a roll or two of paper towels while you are spraying it down with kerosene to mop up the sludge - you will be surprised how much there is at the bottom. I would also remove the PTO assembly so you can reach through the hole back there to get more area cleaned.

It is a messy job for sure - get a cheap roll or two and don't skimp on the paper towels. But you will smile to yourself every time you pull that dipstick out and actually have to angle it to relect the light just to see the oil on your dipstick :-)

Good luck,
Dan

Drain again and remove both side covers and then with a pump up garden sprayer wash it and wash some more with diesel or kerosene..

I need to do this too. I changed my fluid when I got the tractor and it had a ton of water in it too. It looked real milky. I put in new fluid and the hydraulics started working but in a day or so the new fluid looks all milky too. I intend to drain it all again and clean it out and I was wondering if diesel would work well...

The board experts have recommended diesel numerous times and it is sure more available than kerosene..most people these days don't even know what kerosene is or was or what it was used for..When I changed mine, I got in too big a hurry and did not think about removing the side covers and all that, so I wound up costing myself $25. I changed it then like you said in a few days it looked like milk, so I drained and changed it again and I guess this time I got all the water. It has been fine. That is, it has been fine since I replaced the old top pistom with the NAA piston and O-ring with Backup washer....
