Bad coil or bad carb??

when the tractor is running in high gear, it begins to lurch, and bog down, I then put it in neutral, idle it down, and I have to monkey around with the choke to keep it from stalling.

It does this when it is running in high rpm. it seems like it is an air supply problem and I have adjusted the main idle screw correctly according to the manuals.

Could it be some debris that is working into the carb or is it the coil going bad? It's a new coil. In 3rd, at top speed it does fine, then it will lurch until I throw it in neutral and again muck around with the choke to let it recover.

Ideas? advice? thanks. 9N'er

Sounds like a classic case of vapor lock to me. I just had the same thing and fixed it. Go to Archives and do keyword search for "vapor lock" and you will get a bunch. Item 16 is my case and what it was and how fixed...Previously had new carb, coils, did tune up again, newpoints, plugs, and new fuel line, (culprit) read my entry ..
good luck Tom-Pa

9N'er it sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem. Screen in the tank, screen in the bowl/valve, screen in the elbow going into the carburetor casting.

Here is a file I have on cleaning the carb. Hope some of this helps.

9N'er..... ..what is your confidence factor in your distributor advance weights working correctly. What is your confidence factor in your governor?

Monkeying around with your choke is just like pumping your foot throttle in your car. Shot of extra gas to keep it running.

Right now, off the top of my head, without further clues, I'd tend to discount a bad carb or bad ignition coil..... ..Dell

This sure sounds like it a fuel problem. I take it that it will re-start if it bogs down and dies.
How is your govener working?
You may want to muck around with the carb mixtures some more too. Just bacause you set it with the book, dosen't mean that it is right for your altitude and possibly pressure or humidity.
How is it in the lower gears?

Sounds like it is useing fuel faster than the carb is getting it. Check the screens.

Sounds like fuel supply problem. Fuel line clean. This may sound too simple but is the cut off valve at the top of the sediment bowl wide open?
