I'm thinking of just buying a new new carb for my 1951 ford 8n. Which ones are the best to buy? I have rebuilt mine a couple of times and it just does seem to run right . I can remove the main jet altogher and it doesn't change anything . Is their something I'm doing wrong or is it just old and worn out? The engine just does seems to run right until you get it plowing or mowing or something that makes the govenor work. I rebuilt the govenor last year and that seems okay.I runs fine when its pulling or working it just doesn't seem to run good when its just idling or half throttle or so. it seems like it a has a miss in it.

Carberators are the victims of much unneeded tinkering. Most flooding is caused by dirt in the gas.I have found grass and hair in carbs. My Jd H had some trouble with a float valve sticking and not letting gas in.Fixed by soaking the valve in lacquer thinner.Later in the summer it developed a wandering idle.Ran fine while mowing hay.Pulled the carb off and found dirt in the idle passage.Put it back on and tractor ran fine.No money spent.A rebuilt carb for the H costs 450.00 with a 150.00 core charge.A gasket kit costs about 22.00, a complete kit is 50.00.Why the high price on a rebuilt carb? Dont fix them if they aint broke.

Your problem is a missing economizer jet. This part is no longer serviced by Ford-NH or TISCO or anyone that I can find. When I order that part number I get an idle jet. I make my own using a 8-32 brass machine screw. Send me an email and I'll return a picture explaining how to determine if the jet is missing.

Problem with buying a new carb is that they often come without the economizer jet and you're no better off.

I replaced the carb on my 8N a few years ago becuase of that type of problem. I got a new MS type, I don't like the zenth type carbs. And for the price it made more since to buy a new one instead of a rebuit one. Value ---bilt has them
