Trickle charger question

49 8N. 6V. Pos. ground. I am having slow revolutions when starting my 8N in 10deg temps. But so far it still starts, because of this boards help for the last three years. Specially Dell and Sounder. I have a 2/15/150MA automatic battery charger with engine start. My questons is. If I put a trickle charger on it, do I hook it up directly to the Battery post, unlike jump starting? Or would it be best to not trickle charge it and just fully charge it if it gives me trouble starting? And while I am at it, should I ever use the 150MA engine start on the 6v system?
Thanks again for all the help. Happily (kinda) movin snow in MI.
Rick T.

How about something as simple as putting your trickle charger on a timer. Comes on for say a hour each day, then off. Just a thought.

Not a bad idea to put the trickle charger on it an hour or two before you need it.. or overnight if you need it early am in freezing weather.. but i wouldn't leave it on all the time unless it was a 'tender'.

I swear by DelTrans Battery Tenders as Gaspump alluded to. They make one for 6v and I just hook the black lead up to the black(NEG) lead on the battery and the red lead to a frame part or bolt that is not painted - for the POS ground system. Works like a champ. Don't have to do anything except unhook and start the tractor and when you're storing it again, hook it up again. It tends itself. Wish everything worked as well.

This should work for 12v. but not 6v.

Never good to overcharge and weaken your battery. Might put the trickle charge on it few hours before starting but do not leave it on all the time. Neat battery maintainers are at batterytender dot com. Ain't cheap but best there is, site has nice FAQ info too.
