Starter Problem?

Had my 8N out today and shut it off to do some things. Tried to start it in about 15 minutes and it just made a whrrring sound at the starter. Plenty of batter power, so that's not the problem. Tapped on the side of the starter and still had the problem. Tried to pull start it with my dad and his N and had no luck after about 5-6 attempts. But, once we stopped I tried the starter again and it kicked right off. I then started it 4-5 times more after that over a 2-3 hour period without any problems.

Is my starter going bad or is something wrong with the starter or other part?

Thanks

The 8N I just bought had the same problem. Missing teeth on the ring gear. The guy I bought it from replaced the ring gear, it had 10 teeth broken on it. It will only happen if the engine stops in that position, so when it happens again, I would then pull the starter and look at the ring gear then so you can see it then. As someone else stated, you can rock the tractor in gear to move the engine around so the starter has a place to grab.

Sounds like you might have a bad flywheel ring gear, maybe some missing or worn teeth in that spot. Don't know why it wouldn't start when pulled...

Should I replace the starter then? Is this a tricky/difficult job?

I doubt the starter is the problem, the bendix may possibly be bad. Pull the starter out and check to see if the bendix moves freely on the shaft. It should screw away from the rachet. If the bendix is bad, it can be replaced. (When you pull the starter, don't pull the long bolts all the way out, 'cause the starter will fall apart. Kinda keep it all together. You may have to remove the oil filter canister to get the starter out.) While you have the starter out, you can look at the condition of the ring gear teeth. Pull the spark plugs out and take a screwdriver and pry the flywheel around, or rock it while in gear. Do a full revolution inspection and note if the teeth are jagged, worn, broken, etc. If you're lucky, it may be just the bendix. If not, the tractor will have to be split, the old ring removed and a new one hetaed and fit into place. If you're not sure if the bendix is good or bad, take it to a starter shop or your NH dealer. Don't oil it. You may want to clean it with Brakleen or carb cleaner. Installing a new bendix is a little tricky, especially if you're converting from the old style to the new. Check the archives for more info on the differences and procedures.

When we tried to pull start it I first tried 3rd gear but the rear wheels didn't grab and I pretty much skidded along. Then I tried fourth and again when I let the clutch out the wheels didn't grab. I was on our dirt/gravel road and also on the grass, could not get the grip we needed.

I've got a 63 2000, does this all the time. I have been given two opinons. 1. Starter drive needs cleaning
2. Worn teeth on the starter and/or flywheel. I just bump the starter again and it engages.

I've decided to leave it be till it dies completely. But I'm not a "N" owner, so maybe one of the "N" experts has more knowledge.
